I think Glenn Hegar would be the best candidate as the next Texas A&M chancellor because he has extensive knowledge, education, and public sector experience. Hegar is a sixth generation Texan, who grew up farming land that has been in his family since the mid-1800s. His upbringing taught him the core values of character, honesty, integrity and hard work. Also, he is a Texas Aggie and attorney who served in the Texas House and Texas Senate before being elected Comptroller of Public Accounts in November 2014.

Pretending the world hasn't changed in 150 years is a horrible way to lead an educational institution as well. The point is to prepare current and future students to be leaders in current industry. Not to cater to previous students. Ag and Engineering are only 2 colleges in the system.
I remember the business college was in a huge push to celebrate that A&M grads had "Ivey league education and blue collar work ethic"
I'm not sure we can say the same thing about 2025 college grads from many parts of TAMU, on either of those topics.
BIMS, engineering, accounting, all amazing across the board, IMO.
But, it is going to be tough to have the same quality candidate when you double the size of your university in 2 decades.
Voelkel has earned every bit of it. You should really look into everything he and his family have been through. The guy is the best pick of the bunch. Hopefully peoples preferences for who is a good leader isn't tracking with who we've been electing. I expect a higher bar...by far. Integrity, morals/ethics and experience should be key. I like some of the other candidates but I would choose Tyson by far.Flavius Agximus said:

I was fish buddies with Tyson. He was in the hole next to mine.
We were all just fish trying to get by back when I knew him, but Tyson was a special person. Our fish year, he would get up at 5am and go run with the Aggie Pathfinders group. Most of us thought he was crazy. These Pathfinders went out and performed land navigation running cross country through all kinds of thickets and crap. He was never conceded or anything like that. Just one of the guys, but that was a special group.
As far as going from success to success, I can only say he worked damn hard for everything I ever saw him get. I also don't know how you look at a man that has led troops in combat and dealt with the loss of a child and come away with the thought that he's never "overcome adversity."
He's a good dude. Hard worker.

He also served in the army as a ranger and jump master and while being the head of the foundation still is in the national guard as a Lieutenant Colonel. Hope this helps.
I saw a video about Voelkel's background last year. If I can find I will share it.
But he has endured some pretty big challenges and came through them all.

I found the video I mentioned. I've had a few interactions with him and he has always been humble and intelligent. Seems like a good Aggie to take the university and system to the right place.

I know a student who worked at the Foundation and had many interactions with Tyson. They only had positive things to say about him and how he treated everyone there.
My vote would be for Tyson. Not interested in the politicians. Would only want the Bama president if he was bringing Saban with him as HC.

Stuart Bell is really the only qualified candidate. Voeckl would be a backup choice.

I will add the Tyson is a class person and good friend. We graduated high school together, lived just a few miles apart in the country and we did many things together. Went to the same church growing up. Not going to say much more as those above me commenting on him positively have already said what I would.
Blows my mind that Trent and Tyson (the two I know) are old enough and experienced enough to be considered for this. Both great guys but probably ten years too soon.

Hegar and Ashby are both really good people, think strategically, are well connected, and aren't afraid to surround themselves with smart people. I have nothing against any of the other candidates as they all sound like great finalists, but I don't get the hate some are projecting on these two guys.

I get the sentiment for "no politicians", but at some point everyone needs to understand the scope of the Chancellor role and how experience and knowledge in state politics (and processes and relationships) will greatly benefit the eventual nominee. So much of what the Chancellor does is tied to what happens in Austin, that experience and relationship infrastructure will help with hitting the ground running.

He also left a promising Army career to support his family and their dying daughter before earning his MBA from Rice. I'm sure he's had some mentors helping to guide his way, as we all have, but his success is his own.
Whether his vision for the System matches that of the Regents, I guess that's up to the Regents to decide.
Lord knows we have plenty of them, but he ain't one.
