I don't know if I like this but I guess it probably has to be done in order to possibly draft legislation for the rest of the government not under control of the executive branch? I sure hope it doesn't high jack the current efforts and then bury it.

I appreciate the effort, but it's 50 years late and trillions short. Republicans should have been doing this all along. They have totally neglected their oversight responsibility and it has cost this country dearly.

Agreed. $3 trillion over the last 20 years is most definitely on the very low end.

I guess not, and I'm probably jaded, but I have yet to see much real good come out of a congressional committee or have them hold anyone accountable for anything. It usually ends up being a lot of sound bites for the people back home so they can say they are doing something.

Trump and Musk are actually getting things done and holding people accountable, so it makes a new congressional sub-committee seem like a lame copycat with no teeth to me. I hope I am wrong.

The reason the Democrats are panicking about DOGE is that Trump & Musk are performing a Forensic Audit of the entire Government which will uncover everything that can be used in court !

Hopefully this committee will come up with companion legislation to keep it from happening again.

Someone damn sure better be working on that 24/7 - right now.

THIS! It is laughable and insincere to me to see congressmen rallying around Elon and pounding their chest and gasping in horror at what's been uncovered. This was your job to do all along! Outside of a handful like Rand Paul that have preached fiscal responsibility all along it comes across as fake.

Seriously. This committee should just tweet DOGE their questions and they'll provide the answers & documentation over twitter for all to see.

Or host an "Ask Me Anything" session live.

Given the politics at play this would seem to be a cooperative effort to Elon's: summon revealed wasters to the principal's office for individual scrutiny.

Given that MTG will be playing the role of principal I expect red blooded males will opt for paddling over tattling.

Cuts to the budget that DOGE is recommending will ultimately require congressional approval and ratification in a budget bill or formal dissolution of an agency. Executive action alone cannot make that permanent.

I would think this admission on his part would be grounds for kicking him off the sub-committee.

When your stated purpose is to undermine the committee's objectives and even existence, you shouldn't be on it.

Dersh's take. This is how our government is supposed to work. Trump is the unitary Executive but the Congress also has oversight.

Thank God!

A congressional committee is just the thing to get this sorted!

I can't even recall the last time a congressional committee did anything like spend unnecessary money on an "investigation", hold unnecessary hearings that were 100% political kabuki theater and then took no action to actually deal with the things being investigated.

"Congressional committee" is the definition of taking action and solving problems! We're saved!

Given that MTG is heading it (not bright, will do whatever Trump says), I'm guessing it'll be a rubber stamp committee to silence the "Elon has no authority!" Democrats. That's fine with me.

Yeah democrats are demogauging Musk and crying about all the IGs that got fired. The same IGs that did nothing to stop all the waste fraud and abuse.

The main takeaway from this committee is this. What DOGE is doing is applying technology to quickly identify the fraud and abuse. Technology that has not existed. The young DOGE engineers that democrats are demonizing are the ones inventing software techniques on the fly to find this stuff. Now once the 18 months is up and Musk and these guys leave, we will need investment in technology to keep this going and smart engineers to run it, not beauacrats. I hope they repurpose the IG salaries for engineers and and technology.

Then again, let him grandstand. Give him a stage and a microphone to throw his little temper tantrum for all to see. Then when the time comes let him defend the waste, the fraud, the abuse, the kickbacks, and all of the dirty/sleazy shenanigans that have been going on at taxpayer expense.

If DOGE, Elon, and this committee can bring out all of this dirty laundry, let him wear it proudly.

Listening to democrats fight government efficiency efforts and criticizing Elon Musk because he's a billionaire seeking "tax breaks" for his own companies is like watching a short bus-load of low IQ village idiots try to prevent the island of Guam from tipping over.

To be fair, some in Congress have demanded to see the books and have been refused by the bureaucracy.

They need to pass legislation that will punish bureaucrats who defy legitimate requests. We have seen it run rampant when democrats are hiding their malfeasance.

I could see some major skeletons coming out of the closets and I'm not talking waste, fraud and abuse but infidelity claims, homosexual claims (looking at you Lindsey) and ANYTHING and EVERYTHING coming out that's embarrassing to members of Congress that have been used as blackmail for control.

The Dems will want to use any distraction necessary to keep these details out of public eye. I'm just worried they will go with the nuclear option and start assassination attempts. I think it will start to get very ugly soon. We'll see.

This right here is the problem.

So many times the agencies under Dem control (all of them?) refuse to turn over documents, then the hearings are over and they move on to the next hearing. "Hey we tried, vote for us."

Fix this BS for good with legislation…NOW is the time. We the taxpayers should be able to see where the hell our money is going at any given time. Funding mechanisms might be the answer, by triggering the immediate pause whenever information is withheld.

Happy to admit I'm not smart enough to answer that, but my layman's understanding is that only Congress can formally create agencies and only Congress has power of the purse, though when the USAID stuff began hitting the fan there was a lot of talk about how it was originally setup by executive order and then there's the entire rabbit hole issue of impoundments. But whether USAID was subsequently ratified into law vis a vis Congress or simply starting getting multi-billion dollar annual budgets appropriated by Congress - I don't know - it's just one example.

Part of what's the administration is intentionally doing is pressing on the limits of executive authority in a way to force the issues (POTUS ability to direct agency cuts, impoundments, direct / kill bureaucratic authority, etc) to be taken up by the Supreme Court, so if they had carte blanche to prune agencies I think we would see them doing that without the lawsuits popping up alleging executive overreach.

Congress would need to pass a law mandating each administrative agency is required to file a detailed report of expenditures say...sixty days after the close of each fiscal year. The reports to be filed with the committees having oversight of each specific agency.
