When I used to travel to Canada for work, 1 USD was about 1.33 CAD. Now 1 USD is 1.47 CAD.

Trump is going to crash the Canadian currency.
Also, I was shocked to find out that the Canadian GDP is lesser than the GDP of Texas!

Trudeau is on his way out and personally has nothing to lose. So he can be the big man with big balls for once. The next PM will have to clean up the mess, likely Pierre Poilievre.

Of course, there are going to be pro and con impacts of this on both sides since the equilibrium has been disturbed.

It will be interesting to watch the media attack trump for openly doing what Soros effectively did to the pound.

Imports are cheaper with a surging dollar.

Yes clearly. The joke is that tariff fans always say we need to do it to revitalize US mfg…

Yep, Texas 2024 GDP close to 2.7 Trillion, which would be about 8th economy in the World just under France (7th). Italy (8th) and Canada (9th) less than Texas GDP.

Texas has a population around 31 million.
Canada has a population around 40 million.
France has a population around 68 million.

Higher productivity per cap goes to Texas.

I don't know why we are laughing at the average Canadian who is going to really suffer. Most people outside of Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver are a lot like Texans. Over the last few years they've had their gun rights almost completely stripped away, their taxes raised, dealt with inflation, and now their economy is going to get even worse.

The average Canadian needs to earn $188,000 Canadian dollars to afford the median house on the market, but the Canadian government considers $188,000 to be obscenely wealthy and taxes the hell out of them. So now in Canada only the obscenely wealthy can even afford to buy a house. It's ridiculous.

The Canadian Liberal Party is already polling at levels which could be historic lows. They're going to get blown out of the water in the next election.

Does anyone know the 'benchmark' to determine when tariffs are lifted?

I don't hate most Canadians at all, and especially the likely incoming PM who is a RD/Vance clone (maybe smarter).

Hoping this is short lived

What is your point? That we continue the status quo?

The idea is to get them to quit voting for idiots. You say they're a lot like Texans, but we don't have those people running our government.

When Castro Jr is gone - the new PM of Canada probably gets the tariffs removed after a short phone call.

Hello Mr .President. My predecessor was an idiot. Of course we will work with you to stem the flow of drugs and illegals into your county. We want to be good neighbors and good economic partners. Can we begin working together immediately? Great. Thank you.

Well, no one cared when we Americans suffered and our manufacturing was ripped out and thrown away to China. Our own people were also part of this scam, our Presidents, our CEOs, everyone got rich on the backs of everyday Americans who had to find jobs and were advised derisively - "learn to code".

On the other hand, I love Canada. Worked there for some time, the people are nice. Passive aggressive but nice. I hope we can work this out. Pierre is a sensible guy and will be the next PM so we should work with him. Trudeau is on his way out.

America First. Our friends, next. Our enemies, well, we finish them off.

Maybe their housing would be cheaper if they hadn't tried to increase immigration so much the last 30 years. Also they could have tried not voting for the globalist socialist agenda. Not sure I feel sorry for them and I have a cousin who married a Canadian and lives there.

The Liberal Party does not even have a majority government. Trudeau called a snap election a few years ago and actually lost seats. The only reason they are able to do anything is because they've worked out a deal with the New Democrat Party to form a coalition government. Unfortunately the NDP leadership is a grifting POS and is just rubber stamping everything Trudeau wants to do. But the majority of Canadians did not vote for the Liberal Party in the last election.

I hear both ways. We say most comes from Canada, they say the other way around.

I would ASSUME we are correct and Canada is wrong for the simple fact that I know heroin floods mostly south into Washington from Canada.

I only say I know this though because after my half sister died in Seattle it was explained in great detail to us by the investigators my dad hired.

My company is co-headquartered in Houston and Kingston. Additionally we have a field shop about an hour north of Calgary.

I'm in Canada regularly. When I took Canadian first aid, one of the modules was how to administer NARCAN. You can get kits for free at any pharmacy and even at bars.

Highly educational podcast/video on the fentanyl issue, how the Chinese launder the money back into China, their influence on Canadian and other country politics and the Panama Canal thrown in.

Quick summary on manufacturing. China exports the precursors to Mexico west coast and Vancouver via terminals they own/control in the countries. The pills are then manufactured in mass in those countries and then exported around the world including the US.

They launder the money via real estate deals and casinos. They also own/capture a number of politicians in the West to influence things to their favor.

About 45 minutes but well worth the time.

I have also posted about my nephew and his friend group all getting fake pills that were laced with fentanyl. Not looking for sympathy, I just bring it up because I have two brushes with the outcomes that come from these drugs. When the nephew died in Missouri that investigators there said the pills most likely came from Mexico and probably made with chemicals imported from China.

Either way the US has a huge problem and no obvious path to fixing it. I like that Trump is trying something but I think we will fail. As long as people here are willing to buy, I think there will always be an ample supply.

How do you impact usage rates in the US? I think all the ideas I have heard for curbing demand will also not work. Not trying to be pessimistic but I don't think much will work because

  • We can't seem to keep drugs out of prisons, therefore good luck with the border
  • Historically places like China in the 1800s killed users, and even that didn't curb demand
  • Rehab and intervention DON"T WORK. All the meta studies I have seen say relapse from rehab is something like 99% at the five year mark.

And I don't have any smart ideas that I think will help either.
