I don't get this. Am I supposed to believe that someone who has 22 years on the job and rose through the ranks starting as a Firefighter, then Paramedic, Engineer, Fire Inspector, Captain I, Captain II, Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, Chief Deputy, and now Fire Chief is not qualified for the job because they're gay?

If I need the fire department, I'm not standing out front checking sexual orientation before I let them get to work.
Yet you think it's OK for them to use this criteria as part of the hiring process in the first place?
You don't do 22+ years in the fire department without being able to do the job. You don't get promoted up through the ranks without recommendations of your peers and supervisors
You really haven't heard of the Peter Principle?

LA is literally burning right now.
But you think this person is qualified?

How about you show us your work?

Bless your heart, "the fire department" huh?

Are you familiar with the policies and processes of the LA fire department, that DEI policies and processes have been going on there for years? That it's a stated mission for many years to hire and promote non white male applicants or LGBT?

Go do a little research. Then think harder about what these policies are doing (diluting the applicant and promotion pool of qualified people). Then get back to us once you have an understanding of this, which you clearly don't.

ETA, didn't mean to click the emoji.

I have better odds of scoring a threesome with Jennifer Aniston and Melina Trump than those folks getting a new construction permit..... Not impossible but very very highly unlikely.

There need to be a lot of firings after this. The fire department, the mayor, the governor everything just really awful.

Not to be conspiratorial but this is at least worth thinking about from a terrorism angle. It very well might not be but it should be analyzed and hopefully eliminated.

It's no different most publicly traded companies. DEI matters much more than talent.

I don't think all the redblooded American alpha male fire firefighters in Cali could have saved the Pallisades. Water spray against 80 mile an hour winds and canyons of fuel, and houses surrounded by dry brush. Maybe more fire suppression by air but who's flying in an 80 mile an hour wind?

Don't worry, it will all be blamed on the old white guys somehow. It's all our fault. Everytime.

The fire chief was hired in 2022. I'm not sure that's long enough to make the changes needed to fix the department, especially if she isn't control of the resources, namely water, that her department needs. I get that the DEI stuff sounds tone deaf now, but that might have been the dog-and-pony show she had to put on to please the community at the time. The letter to the mayor that's been leaked makes her sound at least somewhat knowledgeable about the issues the department faced and what the impact of her decreased budget would be.

I dislike DEI hires and using criteria outside of relevant experience to make hires, but I'm not completely sure the chief is at fault for the lack of response to these fires, whether she's a DEI hire or not.

She has the receipts that she warned the mayor that budget cuts would severely impact their ability to fight wildfires. She seems qualified and competent despite the departments wasting money on liberal causes de jour

I don't disagree, but when you make it be known that DEI is a priority to you then you certainly invite the scrutiny that they are receiving now. Especially when you see the results that we are witnessing.

The biggest issue we face today is that our leaders -- government, business, etc. -- are all focused on the wrong things.

We no longer care whether the hydrants work or the power lines are buried or the airplanes are on time or the mail is delivered or our products are safe or our customer service people speak English.

Instead, our leaders are focused on trendy social issues like DEI -- and building their own wealth. Even the conservative ones seem to have lost their focus on what matters.

Perfect example: Why the hell is the mayor of LA attending the Ghanian president's inauguration.? Any mayor worth a spit would say "I'm not taking a junket to Ghana ... I'm the mayor of LA and my job is here." But of course, that is so old-fashioned. She's the mayor so she deserves this perk!

Politicians and business leaders have ALWAYS been self-serving. But today they don't even pretend to care about responsibility, competence or efficiency.

I saw a video from a local at a grocery store or Costco and the EV charger station had a absurdly long line. An ev is not what I'd want in this situation.

Basically, according to this guy, there is no water, no power, and little food in the impact zone.

I get it. DEI is important - until the fires are burning. It's the same with the military. In peacetime, you see the same sort of social experiments being conducted as policy. If you're senior staff in, say, the Army, you have to figure out how to navigate the civilian-mandated b.s. while still having your soldiers ready to fight.

I'm not saying the fire chief isn't incompetent, but I'm not going to jump to that conclusion just because she's a lesbian. I want to know more.

Dear Californians:

I am broken hearted by the images and stories I'm seeing/hearing coming out of the fires in and around LA county. It is staggering:
  • 180,000 under evacuation orders: something that we could only conceive happening when a city is under attack in a major war
  • separate major fires almost forming a ring around LA
  • thousands of homes and businesses destroyed
  • schools, places of worship destroyed
  • gridlock during evacuation
  • power blackouts
  • loss of water pressure and water running out when battling fires
  • brave firefighters and other responders going in to face the fires
  • a mother who grabbed her dog and two kids walking out the door telling her children, "Don't look back!"
Break my heart!

I wonder how many of the diversity hires will quit after dealing with this disaster. They're probably like "I signed up to sit around for 99% of the time with the occasional house fire...I'm outta here!"
It's funny you think firefighters sit around 99% of the time.
It's not what I think but what the DEI hire thought.

She may very well be qualified, but the main charge of the fire chief is to ensure the fire department is as capable and ready as possible to deal with these kind of disasters. She went out of her way to say that DEI is a top priority and that she wants to hire as many "people like her" as possible. If you're number one focus is on getting the job done then you would not come out and say that.

Assuming that she is fully qualified for her job then it stands the reason that she should assume that there are other fully qualified gay and lesbian people who can meet the basic criteria and compete with everybody else just like her.

And if she feels like she has to walk a fine line of doing the job and appeasing people's desire for more diversity than she can just go out and say that the job is open to anyone who qualifies and that no one will be discriminated against no matter what based on sex, color, or sexual orientation. That should suffice.

Just to put what 1000 GPM is in relation to a structure fire. That would save 1-2 homes. You're talking about needing thousands of pumps and miles of large diameter hose line to use ocean water. LDH will block roadways and make evacuations almost impossible.

Some of the hydrant issues is a lack of planning on the municipalities. Some is just the massive demand you have on the system. It was never meant to sustain 100s of trucks pumping off hydrants for days at a time. No system is the US would handle that demand.

This is a prime example of failure to mitigate the fuel loads around this homes. Controlled burns are a wonderful thing. If you don't remove or burn off the dead vegetation, nature will.

plus every house that burns down is dumping water out of it's plumbing.

fuel loads in the city are less important, because the houses are the fuel load. Placed side by side and along ravines/ draws, their not much stopping that spread.

But 100% controlled burns and other reduction of fuel loads would fix much of CA's fire problems.

I've yet to see any of the five DC10 air tankers that California has or had up until 2022 for sure. It can carry up to 12,000 gallons of fire ******ant in a belly-mounted tank. The DC-10's advantages in capacity and dispersion is second to none. It can carry three times the ******ant of other large air tankers, allowing crews to triple their work at the same cost. All three tanks can be filled simultaneously on the ground in eight minutes. The ******ant is gravity-fed out of the tanks, and the entire load can be dumped in eight seconds, although the actual drop rate is computer controlled by the flight crew in order to produce the desired ******ant spread over the fire lines. The aircraft is capable of applying a line of ******ant 300 feet wide by 1 mile long. Where are these planes? I've seen the smaller planes but not the DC10s

Flying in windy weather, about 200m over a mountain (adds turbulence) . And the mountain is on fire.
