I suspect Jay wanted no part in the faculty uprising that is about to happen as the Texas government leans in on DEI, tenure, politics, majors, etc at the flagship schools.

The sip job is going to be radioactive.

This is true at any university -- and moreso at tu.

Add to that -- Jay just isn't a wartime consigliere, and it is about to hit the fan in Austin.

Liberal college professors don't listen to the governor (or the president or board of regents). They will throw a fit and plan work arounds to any policy that upsets their liberal agenda. It's a constant case of wack a mole.

passing laws and implementation are two different things.

There are a lot of other things at work. Including targeting non-productive majors, the future of tenure, etc that are going to generate huge feedback from faculty.

The Presidents are going to have rough sledding.

And the biggest factor...which city would one want to retire in? Dallas or Austin? I assume he will only do this for a few years then call it quits.

Hearing this is his last hurrah and looking for the bag (as the kids say) as the SMU job should pay considerably more.

I had him for a couple of finance classes when I was doing my MBA at t.u. Great guy so happy for him and happy that t.u. is losing him!

It's wild to me that old Ags think A&M is this bastion of conservatism it was decades ago and reject anything that is not that. A&M now is very different and much more accepting of the things people pin on t.u.

I will be in an Aggies corner regardless of any personal differences, affiliations, and outlooks on life as long as they are respectful of others and their thoughts and feelings.

Hopefully this helps to wreck any "alignment" there may be between the prez, chancellor, AD, and Sark.

That depends on who is taking the job. Some of us would love to be president of Texas A&M or Texas and would gleefully preside over the destruction of their stupid DEI cartels, worthless sociology majors, and moronic tenure policies that protect professors who teach and call for things like literal genocide of Jews and white people.

I'm sure there are.

And in between the gleeful destruction a President still has to run a giant, fractious organization with multiple bosses, lines of authority, accreditation agencies, and responsibilities -- appealing to students, trying to attract top faculty, and appeasing a huge alumni/donor base that is NOT monolithic -- while trying to stay aligned with both State and Federal laws and policies that are increasingly at odds.

I suspect you have no clue.

I run a law firm, so I have some clue about some of that. But yeah, I really would just want to gut the aforementioned things and then peace out.

This. The vet school might be the most liberal place on campus now. Crazy times.

Watch "Pony Excess" on Netflix. It's really good, especially if you were following the SWC during that time. They had most of their players on a payroll. DMN and another local Dallas newspaper were on it. They got caught twice and kept paying their players anyway. If any team deserved the DP it was them.

Going from ~54,000 students to ~12,000.
Most likely a fat raise.
Most likely a lot less headaches.

Looks like a no-brainer to me.

I agree. 100%. SMU has no one to blame but themselves.

With that said, t.u. was doing a lot of crazy crap, too. Payroll, maybe not, but they DID get caught twice within a 5 year period after the repeat violators regulation (i.e. the death penalty) committing major violations. Their so-called punishment was laughable. 1-year probation each time with no TV ban in either case. It helps, as they did, to have ex-NCAA enforcement personnel like Butch Worley as an assistant AD on their staff at the time (of the second). Worley, incidentally, worked on some of the SMU stuff while at the NCAA. The '87 report was 13 pages and the FINDINGS were far worse than the ACCUSATIONS A&M had leveled against them in later years, yet A&M got a far harsher punishment in those cases (specifically football and basketball incidents).

I'll let you draw your own conclusions, but I know what mine are.

Carry on.
