Remove obstacles like standards and competency. Get your kids out of the public school system.

From the atticle:

"New Jersey will no longer require teacher candidates to pass a basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills test for certification starting January 1, 2025. Governor Phil Murphy signed Act 1669 into law as part of the state's 2025 budget to address an ongoing teacher shortage. This change eliminates the "basic skills" test administered by the state's Commissioner of Education for those seeking instructional certificates.

The law follows similar measures in other states, such as New York and California, aimed at alleviating teacher shortages exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic."

Hire taller teachers.

Elections are when people find out what politicians stand for, and politicians find out what people will fall for.

This how socialism works.

- I want free schooling.....OK, but the education we provide will eventually turn to crap.

- I want free health-care.....OK, but you will end up on a two-year waiting list for crappy care.

- I want free housing.....OK, but as time goes on you will end up living in a slum.
You may not be a moron, but some people think you are.

Just switch to an extensive self-education portfolio that can be tested. In today's info age once a kid is literate and able to read and write its all there to be learned. So devise an approach that makes sure you have high literacy and teach critical thinking skills, and dispense with most of the `front loading' that often now is inaccurate or indoctrination info anyway.

Per the article the primary area of need are teachers in math and science.

So they want STEM teachers who can't pass a basic competency test? Ooof

Actually, I think this may be a good thing. There are those who, for example, may have gotten laid off in a field that are qualified to teach but lack a teaching certificate and can easily pass virtually any certification exam. In many, perhaps most, states, they'd still have to have a certain amount of education hours and/or student teaching to even be able to sit for the exam.

If there's a need, fill it with those that want to fill it. Give them a 90 day probationary period, as well as some support, and see what they can do.

Of course, this all falls apart when the classroom is a complete zoo, which is a huge reason why teachers are leaving in droves in the first place. No certification or lack of certification requirement is going to fix that.

I've read shockingly bad emails and other materials from education administrators. And despite all the "data driven" rhetoric, most don't know what to do with numbers. Which makes me wonder what the tests even prove.

Yeah, good move, hire less qualified people to work in a field that already sucks, where employees are leaving in droves….

Rather than having accountability for students, parents, teachers, and administrators, which would solve a lot of the issues.

Seems they have a money problem so they can't pay teachers more let alone demand discipline in the classroom.
Cut administrative costs to the bone, pay teachers more and make students accountable for behavior.
District admin growth 10x greater than student, teacher growth

From 2000 to 2019 :
  • Students increased 7.6%
  • Teachers increased 8.7%
  • District Administrators increased 87.6%
quote from the article
  • The data also doesn't capture the growing administrative burdens on existing teaching staff. These burdens "represent real costs in terms of staff time, diminished instructional capacity,

Another cost savings would be complete elimination of the Dept. of Education. Just distribute what funds were being sent to the states and let the states decide how the money is to be spent.
Among the latter, under pretence of governing they have divided their nations into two classes, wolves and sheep.”

Reminds me of a study I read back in the day that noted when teacher shortages occur a state relaxes standards. When there are plenty of teachers, the state tightens standards and adds stricter licensing requirements which leads to teacher shortages. Rinse, repeat.
Trump will fix it.

Such redundancy between independent school districts as well, especially in larger counties.

A large portion of new admin positions from that study are due to charter schools being adopted and federal paperwork.

Our admin salaries are less than 2% of district expenditures. That's not the money issue at least not in Texas.

My wife and I have been teaching for 20 years to make up for inflation from our starting salary we would need to make $24,000 dollars (combined) more a year.

Teacher salaries make up 70% of most ISD's budget so the only way to give teachers a raise and keep them in education is to fully fund schools but that has not happened.

Texas is in the bottom 10 in the nation for spending per student and we have more than enough money to fix our public schools but would rather lie and defund public schools to bring a non conservative voucher system into play.

Dont even tax for education at the federal level and let local school districts increase tax where necessary to compensate.

It is " Education Theatre " they are going through the motions in this farce so tens of thousands of loyal DNC dolts can be on the payroll. So they can pay their union dues. which then a cut immediately goes back to the DNC. The purpose is not to educate kids. The purpose is increase the revenue stream for the corrupt state and local DNC machine. It is a financial solution to a financial problem. It has nothing to due with kids or education!!!

The biggest problem with public schools is something funding can't fix - apathetic parents with apathetic kids. I went to a magnet school and our scores were off the charts compared to other local schools, not because the kids were smarter but because they self selected to be there and got the job done.

This is not a thread about vouchers.

A public school like this can't be fixed because the idiots voted for this nonsense. Money fixes nothing here. Lots of folks who disagree up there are trapped because they can't afford private schools.

With a private school, if I don't like what the school is doing, it's easy to change and take my money elsewhere. That theat is a check on the behavior of private schools.
