Family now being told all flights from Dallas to CSTAT are cancelled. Time to look for a rental car or shuttle!

No they don't. If you accept re-booking/delayed flight, you forfeit the money. I know this from experience. Recently delayed 7 hours - took the re-booking, applied for a refund and denied.doubledog said:Quote:

About one year ago, we were part of a group of nine passengers that were flying back from Punta Cana on American Airlines.
After all passengers had boarded, a flight attendant approached a member of our group and informed him that he and his wife would have to deboard from the plane (but not their 8-year-old son). He refused to comply, and argued with the attendant that it was unfair that they were "chosen" to be kicked off the plane. After arguing for about 15 to 20 minutes, they allowed him to remain on the flight.
According to him and another flight attendant, the airport traffic control had calculated that the flight was overloaded with respect to the amount of fuel on the plane, the weight of passengers and luggage, and the impending weather forecast. However, American Airlines had also done the same calculations, and determined that they were "safe" to take off, and chose to keep the flight as is.
As to why American had chosen these two passengers to kick off the flight, he speculated that it was because their tickets were not purchased normally, but had been provided to them as compensation for a previous cancelled flight.

Wow. Such interaction usually does not end well for passengers refusing to deboard. I guess the air crew realized how arbitrary the selection was because if the captain doesn't want you on his aircraft he pretty much has the authority to remove you.
I think the fact that their young son did not have to deboard from the flight, along with the grandparents on the same flight, made them rethink their decision. The grandfather was extremely agitated, and was ready to make them forcefully remove all five of them from the plane. I also think the flight crew realized that it was a dumb decision to remove these two targeted passengers, especially after everyone was on board.jkag89 said:

I'm surprised they decided to pull people and not luggage. I was on a united flight a couple months back where we had "weight issues" and a lot of people's bags were taken off and flown on the next flight then delivered to our houses (including mine). Annoying but way better than taking people off the plane
ATC has no authority to determine weight limits on a flight. The calculations for weight are solely the responsibility of the PIC, and he/she is the ultimate authority on deciding on the proper steps to reconcile.

That is not completely true. Yes ATC has zero to do with it. It is joint responsibility between the PIC and the dispatcher. The dispatcher in fact will have more to do with weight and balance than the captain. At some airlines this is delegated to a load planner but at the end of the day it is a joint decision
The load master is responsible for the certificate and manifest being correct when he or she hands it to PIC in 121 and 135 when one is present. The PIC would be exercising their due diligence by checking the certificate to ensure compliance with airframe limitation. We are splitting hairs here, the point was that ATC has no control over that function.
