It's a naturally conservative demographic, too, and has been ripe for the taking for decades. Other than R's like W, most didn't try and instead had made with the "Mexican bad" message. It wasn't until Abbott started campaigning along the border, making speeches in Spanish that R's began to realize the political potential of the area.

History has shown that most demographics tend to get more conservative for two-three generations after immigrating. That's also why you saw a big Asian push to the right as well.
