**** Amazon. Aholes are determined to ruin everything. Rings of Power is terrible, complete with DEI elves and dwarves.
Much, much worse however, is what they've done to The Wheel of Time. I'll never forgive them for ruining the best fantasy series of all time because they decided to use it for maximum wokeness. Everyone involved should be waterboarded non stop every day for the rest of their lives.
Now they want to destroy James Bond. Again I say, **** them.
Invalid. Their desecration Tolkien's work is far worse than their Wheel of Women nonsense. Both terrible, but the cultural impact of screwing with Tolkien is far worse because his legacy is a mythology of English culture. Screwing with that is screwing with cultural identity.
But yeah - Amazon should be considered cultural insurgents who retcon & devour all that they touch. I assume it's the death of Bond if they have their way with him.
The difference to me is that Rings of Power is an original story set in Tolkien's universe that is loosely based on events mentionedin The Silmarillion. The desecration is still really bad, but it would be a LOT worse if they were trashing an actual Lord of the Rings adaptation.
The Wheel of Time is adapting the actual books. Horribly. Appallingly. Have you read the books? They are INCREDIBLE. The fact that you call it "The Wheel of Women" tells me no. In fact, it epitomizes just how unbelievably terrible the show is vs books. Casual viewers really don't have any grasp on what the story is actually supposed to be because of how badly the storylines and overall mythology has been butchered. It is straight up criminal what they have done to what is in my opinion is the best fantasy epic ever written. I LOVE Lord of the Rings, but I actually love Wheel of Time more. Robert Jordan is rolling in his grave right now.
I blame Rosamund Pike. When I saw she was set as Moraine, I had a bad feeling then when I s a that she was an exec producer, my bad feeling went worser. I was not disappointed in my disappointment.
There's plenty of blame to go around.
1. Rosamund Pike pushed to pump up her role and make the show more female-centric.
2. Rafe Judkins decided to undercut the entire magic system because he was afraid its male/female differences, which are fundamental to the story, would offend Trans people.
3. Amazon refused Rafe's request for 10 episodes a season with a 2 hour premiere, so the story is now incredibly rushed. They also wrecked the end of the first season with vaccine mandates and COVID shutdowns.
4. The writing staff are complete idiots, and the majority haven't even read the books they are supposed to be adapting.
5. The list goes on and on and on. Woke casting. Excess focus on made up, pointless storylines at the expense of the actual story. Completely emasculating the 3 main male characters that are core to the story.
Just an absolute train wreck and really unfortunate. I was so hyped for a live action adaptation, and it's just a complete letdown.
How did they portray the Aiel?
On #2, you might as well not have hobbits and orcs in LOTR. How in the world do you mess that up? It's the basis of that entire series.
Aiel have had limited screen time so far, but will be featured in the 3rd season (follows book #4). Overall portrayal has been good, except they ruined Aviendha. They cast a black actress for her of course, and they combined her character with Gaul. I have no idea how that will work when she now canonically has to be in 2 completely different places at the same time.
And yeah, it's maddening. Male/female differences are basically the entire point of the story, with a suitably progressive stance of "different but equal". The plot itself fundamentally doesn't work without them. Amazon has just ignored this completely so far in hopes that they can somehow present some sort of plot that makes sense without it.
I've skipped this show so far. I think that will continue.
You're not missing much. It is on par with Shannara series (Terry Brooks) done by MTV several years ago. It was also done with a sledgehammer and butcher block.
I keep holding out hope, but am expecting nothing but continued disappointment. Maybe I'm a masochist, but I'll keep watching. I just want them so badly to right the ship, because the show could deliver some of the most epic moments in TV history. Dumai's Wells and The Last Battle getting proper treatment would be an absolute spectacle that would put any moment on Game of Thrones to shame. And that's just the biggest of many many huge battles/set pieces in the series.
This could and should have been the best series to ever grace television (unless you just hate fantasy), and Amazon is just completely blowing it so far.
I wish Brandon Sanderson (wrote the last 3 books after Jordan died) would speak out and blast the desecration of the series, but he won't out of respect for Jordan's widow. He's made a couple of minor comments, but fallen back to the bull**** coping mechanism of most fans that the show "is just another turning of the wheel".
