Politics related cause the US House of Reps helped negotiate the settlement.

Quote:

Law firms that negotiated a landmark $2.8 billion settlement with the National Collegiate Athletic Association over compensation for student-athletes have asked a judge to award them more than $515 million in legal fees

Law firms Winston & Strawn and Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro filed their requests on Tuesday in federal court in Oakland, California.
Seems they expect another $200M from clients for a grand total north of $750M

Quote:

The ongoing student payments could lead to more than $200 million in additional fees to the plaintiffs' lawyers over 10 years, putting their total compensation at about $750 million, according to an expert's report, opens new tab in the case.
$2.8B settlement and they are arguing that $515M is a bargain...

Exactly $750 million is a steal

College athletics changed forever by ambulance chasing attorneys and a very friendly venue in the northern District of California. That doesn't mean things were totally perfect before, but that is also no reason for the absolute mess and chaos that they're gonna leave in their wake.

Key word is "steal"?
Some how I think the taxpayers are being robbed.

This lawsuit did not create the mess and chaos we see.

It's a byproduct of it.

State legislatures that told NCAA they could not stop NIL is what created the mess.

Seems 25% is standard in class action suits...

Quote:

Kessler and Berman said their request was "significantly less" than the 25% benchmark that the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which hears cases from California, uses to assess fee awards in class action settlements.

O'Bannon v NCAA started it.

Then you had the SI tweet concerning JFF and Clowney jerseys for sale on the NCAA website. Numbers not names.

Then you had CA "legalizing" NIL and that lead the domino effect which showcased a pissing contest among state legislatures...

Steve Berman is a shark. Represented my then wife (named plaintiff) in a class action of Blue Cross in around early 90's.

She won.

At $500 per hour, that's 360 layers & staff working for 2-years straight on this one single suit.

Why is this considered "reasonable' but the OT pay for the NYPD admin is an outrage?

The same reason that it's a reasonable for an NFL quarterback to make over $30 million a year but for a firefighter to make $100,000 a year. The same reason an apple has an edible peel, but an orange does not.

You will get no argument for me regarding the outrageous nature of attorney fees. But your comparison falls flat as they are completely different things.

I can't wait for people to turn on lawyers with the same passion that they attack Realtors with.

People have been attacking lawyers for centuries! (Rightfully so many cases) lol

Realtors just came to the party recently.

No one ever said "first, let's kill all the realtors."

Contingency vs salary/wages. No win, no reward.

Let's say you wanted to sell something somewhat valuable, but you don't know how to find a buyer. You shop it around and find you can maybe get $30k for it. However, you find a broker who says he can get you a lot more, but he requires 20% of whatever he can sell it for, with a minimum guarantee of $40k. In a month, he comes back and says he found someone willing to pay $300k for it, netting himself $60k. He only made about 20-30 phone calls shopping it around and negotiating. Would that be worth $60k?

What if you multiplied everything by 100, and he got you an extra $27 million? Would his minimal work be worth $6 million?

These lawyers got a nearly $3 billion settlement for their clients. Just because $750 million is a huge number doesn't mean they're not owed a reasonable percentage. If you said any case could only be worth up to $x, then their incentive to do better than whatever gets them $x is basically nothing.

The lieutenant draws eyebrows because she's 1) a city employee being paid with public funds and 2) getting paid twice her base in OT. At that point, the city should have just hired another person. It also draws questions about nepotism and how that much OT was approved and by whom.

Buzzards, plain and simple. I got in a discussion/disagreement with one of our judges during voir dire. Started with the concept of jury of your peers and went out on other tangents. The issue started with one of the lawyers asking us if any of us had ever contributed to any organization that supported the abolition of the jury system. I raised my hand, they asked me to approach the bench, and I said I had not yet made any such contribution but wanted to know if they had the name and address where I could send a check.

Went down the rabbit hole of jury duty being community service and I told him I had done more community service than he and the four attorneys had done all combined. Then we delved into the two sets of attorneys, don't remember how we got on that topic and he mentioned finding out right or wrong. But I said they don't care about right or wrong, they care about a pay day. I said they can switch sides in mid trial, and never miss a beat. And fairness came up and I asked what about a 20 something single mom, with a couple of kids, who lost her husband in an accident. And the lawyers got 30% to 40% of the settlement, when she lost a husband at an early age and the kids lost a dad. Is that fair?

I have little respect for most of them. I wanted to say that, in our little town, the really piss poor attorneys become judges, but I felt I had pushed things far enough as it was, lol.

He said give the man his $6 and let him go.

You are correct...

Quote:

The firms' requested fees are based on hourly rates ranging up to $1,980 an hour for Kessler. Winston, with more than 975 attorneys, said it invested more than 40,400 hours into the lawsuits.

Berman billed at $1,350 an hour, the filings showed. Other partners at the 80-lawyer Hagens Berman billed at between $800 to $975 an hour. The Seattle-founded firm said it devoted more than 35,900 hours to the lawsuits.
