If TikTok is genuinely a threat then why do politicians have TikTok accounts?

Read the article I posted all the way to the end. Highly captive / addicted audience. Note that users would take $50 to delete their accounts, or conversely, if everyone they knew got rid of theirs too, they'd actually pay to be rid of it. You've got a good product if your customers hate it but can't quit.

I'm not sure what you're driving at. So you think the government should protect us from ourselves? That's a big **** no from me.
No. But tic-tok is controlled by the CCP. And damn straight our nation needs to protect its people from cyber aggression from China. Just yesterday they hacked critical gov systems. There is practically a cyber war between our nations. Tic-tok is an element in that war.

Wake the F* up.

It must be a real threat when the POTUS has an account.

Wake up. You're being lied to.
Ha what I am guessing is you supplement or generate your income or use it as an important advertising tool in your business. That is the only case where you would be remotely justified in your defense of this Chinese trash.

Nice try, I don't need to supplement my income. Donald Trump doesn't even have a problem with TikTok.

Again, if TikTok was a genuine threat, it would have been banned YEARS ago.

This is so naive as to be laughable. Yes, because any time a threat is identified our government quickly and efficiently mitigates it. Those threats never persist and creep into our lives. Ever.

It's known that Tik Tok is Chinese spyware, malware, and a culture weapon designed to degrade ours. They don't allow any of the rot we have on their instance.

Besides, it's a social media platform. It's essentially fungible. If this gets banned or divested (and it should), a clone will pop up and no one will even remember Tik Tok in a year. See the dozens of tech and social media platforms that rise and fall in relatively rapid succession since the dawn of the internet.

This won't be the last app they come for. Isn't about China as China can get all the data they need off of Facebook/Google/Youtube X etc. Your data is already sold to China.

People forget but we like things like this to be American owned. It's not a new phenomenon.

Years ago an Irish-Italian named Marconi demonstrated long range wireless to the world. Brits backed his company and wireless exploded in popularity worldwide.

In America, much handwringing in Congress ensued over a (British) foreign entity having that much control over a critical communications company. And thus was born Radio Corporation of America which folded all of Marconi's stuff into a domestic company.

You know it better as RCA.
Trump will fix it.

We are worried about people doing ****ty dances on an app when our entire power grid relies on equipment made in China. Hell our economy runs on made in China.

How about we worry about the things that actually matter? Our politicians are so ****ing stupid.

Related topic...we also just announced we are banning TD Link routers. Many of you probably have these because they very rapidly became the market leader. I had never heard of them because I last bought a router when they were still relatively unknown. They've gone from 20% market share to 65% market share in less than 5 years.

They are made in China so all of you who have these likely have spyware in your homes. I would recommend replacement. Banning Tik Tok and TD Link does give me hope we are waking up to the scourge that is China. It's one thing to own Chinese products; it's another to own Chinese tech or anything connected to the internet made in China.

Now we Nneed to do a deep dive on iPhone and understand how compromised those could be. Hopefully, they are not since there is much more American oversight of those.

Project much? I don't have social media and I don't let my kids on it. That said, TikTok's algorithm being chicom driven (meaning, not the same), essentially being a free for all with csam and illegal drugs, scraping all your phone data, and monitoring your eye movements, etc. with the camera while you use it, are all far beyond x.

But at least you scored a cheap point, right?

Nobody is projecting or looking to score a cheap point. Do you really think X, Facebook, Instagram, etc. aren't listening in, taking data off your phone, location, etc, and attempting to influence you? It doesn't matter who owns it, they all do it.

Stupidly, the DoD uses TP Link so China has immediate backdoor access straight into Defense.

Good job guys.
Link please? I always thought TPLink was a consumer grade brand. Best Buy / Amazon etc.

I believe anything used in the government has to be certified for government use. Cisco, Juniper etc....
Can confirm we have an enterprise grade 10G TP-Link switch on our network. NIST and FIPS compliance can be a grey area sometimes.

I keep hearing (reading here and other places) i don't have social media. But yet here people are on TA a social media site, or their wives are on Intsta FB, Snap, or any other site where people gather in large masses.

When I explain well if your wife, daughter, child has those apps, guess who also has access to your information.

Some of you all are too funny while banging your proverbial fists against the table saying we have to ban tic tok for the greater good, all the while asking Alexa to turn turn down the heat, or telling their buddies about the latest dash cam or game cam they bought off Amazon. Only later to find out Moultri sourced the guts from China.

Interesting is tic tok splashed during covid as the only SM of this type. Slowly afterwords FB came our with Reels, Snapchat, Instagram et all.

I wonder which lobbyists are making the big push. Because if it were truly about national security, there are a crapton of ports, airports etc that China has sight lines too.

I have a TPlink Deco mesh system and love it. I'd be interested to hear from tech/security folks which alternatives are most secure.
I have all the TP Link Kasa stuff for home automation. I keep it all on a separate network for a reason. I've worked heavily in security for years so I'm fully aware of the risks.

I'd say that most of the major brands would be safest. Orbi or Eero would be my suggestion, but even they have had plenty of security vulnerabilities published. The good thing about them is big US companies are watching and testing constantly.

What works the best is a different story. The answer is more access points for better coverage.

Yes, but the others aren't owned by a Chinese company (TikTok) who's country is seen by most, especially conservatives, as the enemy of this country.

An enemy that gets a thread every once in a while on F16 of how evil and much of an enemy that are to the United States. Yet, for some reason, Ticktock is now okay?

TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, was founded by Chinese entrepreneurs. ByteDance is a privately-held global company, roughly 60 percent owned by global institutional investors (such as Blackrock, General Atlantic, and Susquehanna International Group), 20 percent owned by the company's founders, and 20 percent owned by its employeesincluding over 7,000 U.S.-based employees. It is not owned or controlled by any government or state-controlled entity.
