The Texas House GOP Caucus will meet Saturday, December 7th to choose their nominee for a Speaker for the official Jan. 14th vote on the House floor. A 3/5 vote (53 out of 88) is needed in the GOP Caucus by the 3rd round for the nomination.

David Cook has signed the Contract with Texas which among other reforms follows the Texas State GOP Legislative Priorities of NOT appointing Democrat Chairs:

Dade Phelan is a continuation of the obstructionist Speakers following Joe Straus and Dennis Bonnen with the aid of the Democrat House members to limit conservative legislation in Texas for the last 16 years.

Current List of supporters for Cook, Phelan, Unknown:
https://texasconservativemajority.com/who-working-with-democrats-elect-phelan/

With David Spiller and Trent Ashby recently added, David Cook has 48 votes and needs 5 more to reach the 3/5 vote.

This is the most important vote for the next Texas Legislative Session.

Contact your Representative or every undeclared member if you are tired of Democrats and RINO Speakers obstructing Texas legislation and ask them to support David Cook as the next Speaker of the Texas House.

Even the Travis County GOP Party blasted Phelan and supported the more conservative choice in David Cook (only one running that signed the Contract with Texas):

https://traviscountygop.org/news/austin-republicans-demand-conservative-house-speaker
Quote:

Resolution on Candidates for Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives
Whereas, the Texas House of Representatives needs a Speaker with a proven conservative voting record that truly reflects the agenda of the Republican Party of Texas;
Whereas, House Leadership and/or the Speaker has
  • Repeatedly stood against Republicans, siding with Democrats by appointing them to committee chairmanships, thereby blocking conservative legislation;
  • Promoted the impeachment of Attorney General Ken Paxton as a personal vendetta;
  • Failed to send Republican members' legislation to the floor for a vote;
  • Stood against both the $100K homestead exemption and school choice, both priorities of the people and the Governor;
  • Won his primary by a mere 366 votes, and then only by appealing to Democrat voters in the Republican Primary;
  • Has won past speakerships only with overwhelming Democrat support and the purchased fealty of a few Republicans, making him the Democrat minority leader, not the Republican leader of the House majority;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Travis County Republican Party supports only candidates for Speaker who have signed the Contract with Texas and demand that Republican Texas House Representatives elect a Speaker whose views align with the values and agenda of the Republican Party of Texas.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Travis County Republican Party shall share this resolution with every Texas Republican State Representative and Representative-Elect as well as news and social media outlets.

I hear you. I don't know anything about Mano, but listening to Bettancourt on his how on Friday's, it appear that he is a colleague of the conservative message. Maybe it's just political theatre which they all do. But wasn't he on the impeach side of the Paxton thing?

I may have told this story here. But last month, I came across a traffic accident in Mansfield where a car was disabled in the intersection with an older lady driver. I pulled over to help push her out of the intersection since it was dangerous and no way she could do it.

Two other guys came out to help. After getting the car out of danger, i went to shake hands with the other guys and one of them was David Cook.

Imagine the house speaker being a normal enough dude to get out of his car to help push someone's car out of an intersection.

Great News!

The race now shifts to selecting David Cook over the Straus//Bonnen/Phelan puppet Burrows.

From the Tribune article:
Quote:

Phelan's withdrawal sets up a renewed scramble for control of the House. State Rep. Dustin Burrows, a Lubbock Republican and top ally of Phelan, has filed paperwork to run for speaker, according to two sources familiar with the matter. His path to the gavel rests on courting the chamber's 62 Democrats and roughly 40 unpledged Republicans and reports of his candidacy were already drawing swift pushback from Cook's camp and grassroots GOP activists, who are set on selecting a speaker without relying on votes from Democrats.

Email addresses for Non-committed members were posted earlier. Phone numbers can be found:

Despite making all the right noises during the primary, it turns out that my rep, Stan Gerdes, has the Matthew Dade Phelan campaign as his second largest campaign contributor. I will be calling and emailing today, but I suspect he will vote for whoever Dade tells him to. Hopefully we can get a well funded primary challenger to change that in a couple of years.

Quote:

In a statement, Attorney General Ken Paxton called Burrows "Dade 2.0."

"Phelan's legacy is one of betrayal: prioritizing Democrat interests over his own caucus, leaving Republican members exposed, attempting a shameful impeachment stunt and consistently failing to deliver for the voters who sent him to Austin. His so-called "leadership' disqualified him long before this moment. But make no mistake, the swamp isn't drained yet. Now, the Austin establishment is rallying behind Dustin Burrows a politician handpicked by Phelan and the Austin Establishment to continue their reign of weak leadership and backroom deals," said Paxton.

From the article up above, this tells you everything you need to know.
Quote:

With Phelan stepping aside, establishment forces are attempting a last-minute push to place another candidate in the race. Republican State Rep. Dustin Burrows (Lubbock) has filed for the position and, according to reports, spent Thursday night meeting with House Democrats in an effort to secure their support and form a coalition of Democrats and Republicans ahead of the January vote. Burrows has served as the Calendars Committee chairman under Phelan.

I wonder if any anonymous sources will report that Burrows is a philandering drunk that has propositioned underage teens?

With those types of rumors out there could any Republicans safely support him?

Latest Tribune article:
https://www.texastribune.org/2024/12/06/texas-house-speaker-david-cook-dustin-burrows-dade-phelan/

Quote:

Meanwhile, Cook's supporters launched a full-court press on Friday aimed at getting freshman holdouts on board with Cook and casting Burrows as a "Phelan 2.0" who would be equally unpalatable to GOP primary voters.

"Burrows was [Phelan's] righthand man, and would seek to appease the Austin cronies who have obstructed and needlessly slowed GOP priorities for more than a decade," hardline conservative activist Michael Quinn Sullivan wrote on social media. With Cook, Sullivan added, "you may not get everything you want... but he aligned himself with the [House] Republican reformers when he didn't have to."

Notably, Sullivan precipitated the downfall of Phelan's predecessor, Dennis Bonnen, when he secretly recorded a 2019 meeting with Bonnen, the then-speaker, and Burrows. During the meeting Burrows offered up a list of 10 fellow Republicans who Sullivan's political network could oppose in the upcoming primaries. Bonnen announced his resignation shortly after the recording came to light, and Burrows stepped down as chair of the House GOP Caucus.

The Texas State Republican Executive Committee (2 Party Members from each Senatorial District) passed a resolution to support a Speaker that supported Legislative Priorities such as No Democrat Chairmen.

Whole Resolution is:
https://texasgop.org/texas-house-gop-caucus-resolution/

Quote:

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Republican Party of Texas calls on the members of the Texas House Republican Caucus to comply with the Platform by selecting a strong, conservative Republican who is committed to these reforms and is also committed to the Legislative Priorities adopted by the Republican Party of Texas delegates, and for whom they will vote as a unified body when the Legislature convenes, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Republican Party of Texas recognizes that some members may attempt to short-circuit this process through various means, including by denying a quorum to the Caucus, by voting with Democrats for a Speaker who was not selected by the Caucus, or through rule changes to allow for secret ballots in the leadership election the voters of Texas who demand conservative reform will not be fooled by these subversive tactics, and efforts to elect a Speaker who will appoint Democratic committee chairmen, or to initiate or obscure an effort to elect a Speaker with Democratic votes will be considered, and seen and addressed by voters and by the Republican Party of Texas, as violations of the Platform and of the Legislative Priorities.
David Cook is the only Speaker candidate that meets the criteria.

So say Cook wins. Can the Burrow faction later subvert it? Like go in with the democrats and offer them chairs again and whatnot in return for their vote? Or is today's decision somehow binding?

It looks like Burrows and the Runaway RINOs will prevent any further GOP Caucus voting.

It's time to make a list and primary as many of them as we can.
If Burrows is offering to kill vouchers for Dem support, then he will be the top target.

We replaced 15 of the 22 anti-voucher reps last election and will just have to do it again.
