Basically Pete is not helping himself when he says he won't drink if given pentagon job, that alone is so daming!
How? An anonymous person accuses him of uncontrollable drinking at both the nonprofits AND at Fox News.

Multiple people from both organizations put their names behind their statements saying that though he was known to have a drink or two when out, and that he was known to be a womanizer, he was NOT an alcoholic nor had drinking ever interfered in any way his ability to do jobs at either the nonprofits, or at Fox News.

Hegseth himself follows up and states that not only is the anonymous allegation grossly inaccurate, but he views SecDef like the Gen. Order 1 rule regarding drinking in a war zone. He says that he could get a call, any day, at any time of day or night with an emergency and he would need to be at 100% at every point in time while he's SecDef. Therefore, he will not partake of alcohol while in the post.

And you call that damning? Curious.

Sounds like Ernst realizes this might not be the hill for her to politically die on.

Ernst IS a perfect swamp rat example. Gets elected and comes in with a bunch of conservative tailwind, the swamp gets their tentacles around her and another RINO is born. She making back door money hand over fist.

Well it seems like there is at least one primary opponent circling. Probably more than one right now. The last thing you want is Kirk, Pressler and Posobiac showing up in Des Moines and funding field offices. That's a nightmare for any incumbent. I'd prefer they stick to expanding the map a bit and setting up offices in Texas to take out Cornyn but I'm selfish.

If she gets in the way of Trump, he could easily have her primary'd in Iowa. I'd vote her out if she ****s up Trump's fast start back in office.

Quote:

When your opening line is, "I'm Joni Ernst, I grew up castrating hogs on an Iowa farm," not only do you have our attention you've got us squirming in our seats. (Ouch.)

Before the castration spot aired, Ernst was struggling to raise money, trailing Republican frontrunner Mark Jacobs by several points for the GOP nomination. Conservative women including Sarah Palin found the ad humorous, endorsed her candidacy, and helped Ernst build her war chest. Within months, she was the undisputed frontrunner.

And in 2020, she was elected to her second term in the Senate.

Unfortunately, there's a disease endemic to D.C. called "turning native." For whatever reason, it seems to infect conservatives more than liberals. There's no known cure. (Symptoms include the sudden abandonment of traditional beliefs; invitations to "trendy" house parties; and oodles of donations from cabals of liberal bigwigs. Consult your doctor for more information.)

Over the past few days, Joni Ernst has emerged as the face of the Republican opposition to President-elect Trump's nominee for secretary of defense, Pete Hegseth. She stood in judgment of his candidacy and (according to media reports) found him lacking. As her hometown paper noted, she strongly suggested that Hegseth is unworthy of being secretary of defense.

This is the same Joni Ernst who voted in favor of Lloyd Austin, President Biden's selection for secretary of defense.
Quote:

For generations, "conservative" Republicans would talk a big game back home, but then "go native" when they were elected to congress. During election years, they'd put on their overalls back on and pose by a pickup truck, but all those years in between? They're dressed to the nines, hitting all the trendiest cocktail parties, cutting backdoor deals with Democrats.

D.C. is a wonderful town for a squishy Republican. You're seen as one of the few "good ones," and you get the "John McCain treatment": fawning, adoring, positive press… just as long as you never threaten their power base.

During the 2024 campaign, MAGA activists changed the rules. Now, there's a very high cost to "going native."

And the mainstream media can't cover for you anymore.

Joni Ernst assumed she could leverage her "concerns" about Pete Hegseth to earn herself a higher profile, win liberal accolades, and perhaps even snag the secretary of defense job herself. It's the oldest game in the House of Cards.

At this point, even if Hegseth falls short of the votes needed due to Ernst, McConnell, and other squishy Republicans that want to obstruct Trump's picks, Trump should call their bluff.

Do not pull Hegseth in favor of another pick. Force a floor vote.

My guess is that some of these holdouts might think twice if they actually have to record a NO vote.

Trump should make a statement very similar to this one. " I want a vote for every one of my appointees, so we can see which Republicans vote no and we can knock next election cycle"

Might not change much though as Mitch is in his last term. Collin's and Murkowski won't get beat.

Leaves Ernst and Graham. Both will be easily be defeated next primary. No matter what they do

Told y'all that ass is done for. No matter what she does lol idiot. Even McConnell and Cordyn fell in line. Wtf

Ernst must be getting a hell of a kickback from multiple people. Graham I think has fell in line, he got the message early, but still too late. He still has the votes unless someone surprises.

Maybe McConnell was going out with some dignity, unlike McCain. We all can hope.

I never said that Austin was qualified. I'm well aware that Biden's cabinet selections were dictated by DEI. Hegseth's only professional experience is being a co-host of a TV show. On the other hand, DeSantis has been by far the most effective governor in recent memory.

He said some allegations were disturbing. Never said he wouldn't support Hegseth. And he pointed out allegations don't count unless a person testifies.

Y'all need to stop believing everything on X. Graham is a solid "yea" on this and all the nominees.

Idk why Trump isn't calling her out, guess he's leaving that up to the people, musk, Vivik, Pressler, Hanity, Kirk

I mean she's gone, among others regardless. But the pressure would be huge with him calling her out. At the same time he also doesn't want to drive them completely against him. So I guess the outsiders and long game is better choice.

I hope Pete Hegseth can overcome numerous obstacles to be the Secretary of Defense because he opposes women in combat roles, and I completely agree with him. I served in the Army from July 2006 to September 2011 as a military analyst, and I deployed to Iraq twice (December 2007 to February 2009 and June 2010 to May 2011). There is no way around the biological differences between men and women. Even if the exceptional women can meet the infantry requirements, cohesion would be another issue. If we want the military to maintain its capability and readiness, we must not lower our standards to cave to political correctness. Therefore, combat arms should remain restricted to males.

I think it's pretty clear that Trump has one major objective for Hegseth as SecDef, and that is to clean the place up. Root out the DEI infestation, and all of the career bureaucrats who are busy lining their own pockets and creating their own feifdoms rather than working to make our military as strong as possible. Oh, and not stab POTUS in the back in the process.

Is Hegeth the "best" for this job? Maybe not. But he's Trump's choice, and as such should be given a chance to do his thing. Unfortunately, DOD must first be broken down some before building it back. Hegseth may just be best person to handle phase one.

He definitely has a soldier's mindset, and has the support of the troops. That's in addition to his being an excellent communitcator (ie. co-host of a TV Show.)

You may prefer DeSantis. But he's not the choice. Are you ready to second guess straight out of the gate and create a ****storm for every other nominee based upon anonymous sources? Because that's what will happen if the innuendo and false allegations are allowed to tank Hegseth. They'll immediately move on to RFK, then to Gabbard, and so on ad nauseum.

So Austin wasn't qualified, yet he sailed through confirmation. Why are so many Republicans willing to kneecap a Republican president before he even takes office? It truly befuddles me.
