The title of the article is misleading. He still is ahead by 2.5 million votes. But adding third party votes brings him slightly below 50%.

Quote:

On Election Night, with characteristic modesty, Donald Trump claimed an "unprecedented and powerful mandate." He certainly won the contest legitimately, if more narrowly than many observers initially thought. His popular-vote margin over Kamala Harris has dropped from around 3 percent on the evening of November 5 (or about two-thirds of Joe Biden's margin in 2020) to 1.62 percent today. That's about a half-percent smaller than Hillary Clinton's national popular-vote margin over Trump in 2016. To make some other comparisons: Barack Obama won the popular vote by 3.9 percent in 2012 and 7.2 percent in 2016, and George W. Bush won the popular vote by 2.4 percent in the very close 2004 election.

I suppose the only thing the Dems can do now is to show how close the vote was.

They just can't recognize their candidate was terrible.

3rd party??? Everyone KNOWS = wasted votes by nerds and weirdos. Don't count...nothing's changed.

Sorry if I offend...but facts ARE facts.

ETA - actually, I wish there were a "serious/viable" 3rd party.

Know what he hasn't lost? His mandate, and plans to be sworn in on Jan 20th.

I've seen about 15 article recently about the 'mandate that wasnt', etc...and they jump through all kinds of hoops to dismiss the election results.

They expanded the Senate lead, took back the house, won the WH. They did this while winning the popular vote, and Every.Single.Swing.State.

This is like a team losing by 40 points, but bragging about winning the 4th quarter.

You got your butt whipped. Stop blaming the refs, and touting moral victories.

Bolded part - what? I thought he was projected to lose going into election day? Granted, I was out of the country on business so maybe I missed something...

Oh no! His win in the popular vote is lost! Oh wait, no it's not. It's not a mandate like Clinton won with.. checks notes... 43% of the vote. Oooof.

it would be interesting to see a stack rank of states according to when they had completed their vote counting as well as the number of votes.

Trump still won the popular vote, won every swing state, won the senate, kept the house, and made Texas more red than Iowa and almost as red as Kansas.

The other shocking numbers are Dems just won New Jersey by 5, won New York by 11.6, Illinois by 10.9, won New Mexico and Minnesota by about 5, won New Hampshire by just 2, and won Virginia by just 5. Democrats lost massive ground in some of the signature blue states like New York and Illinois.

2 million more votes (vs the 3 million for Harris) showed up for Trump in the same timeline. I took a snap shot of the vote totals nationally about a week after the election 74.5MM vs 71.1MM in favor of trump. Given that more Dems vote absentee/mail it stands to reason Dems would have more. So out of the 5 million votes added 3 million went to Harris (60%) and 2million (40%) went to Trump. Now that is nationally. I would like to see state and territory wise where these votes increases and for who.

From 2016, 2020, 2024 Dems went 65.8MM, 81.2MM, 74.2MM

Republicans went: 63MM, 74.2MM, 76.7MM.

And going back to 1952 both parties have experienced both upward trends and spikes in a 3 election time period. Some more extreme that what happened in 2016, 2020, 2024

And how much of this "loss" is attributable to the illegal counting done in PA and the super sketchy ballot batches in Detroit and Milwaukee? And let's not pretend passive mail in ballots in Washington speak with equal strength as a vote cast in person waiting hours in the cold.

In short: votes for Trump > votes for Harris = Trump was more popular.

It illustrates sentiment especially when you see Harris LOSE 30% of the CA vote. Her home state! With the most liberal voting laws!!! No trump didn't gain that much in his favor so what that tells me is she was very unpopular... Hell let's compare to Hillary prepandemic her vote total in CA was ~17% less than Hillary! Harris's message and/or her personally had many dems in a very Dem state stay home and not vote for her

Bill Clinton in 1992 won...

42% of the national vote. As much as we hate the mainstream Pravda propagandists- it is never enough!

With an extremely popular 3rd party candidate who siphoned off much of the vote.

Latest data I found on Wiki

Trump: 49.87%
Harris: 48.24%
Stein: 0.50%
Kennedy: 0.49%

Presumably Trump would have pulled at least 0.13% from RFK Jr.

This was a lot closer than you think it was. So much so that I think the Dems should just start planning on running Kamala again in 2028

They should also plan to focus on getting all those votes in California and New York. Lot of low hanging fruit in those highly populated states and just try to win the popular vote. Forget about those lower ev states . Focus on dominating the big prizes… except Texas . In Texas they need to throw as many $ as possible on the wokest Senate candidate they can find. Throw everything you have at that . Coming within 5 points of winning the Texas Senate seat should absolutely be the goal. After all, it's Texas! Just imagine the tremendous impact nationally if you show that you can come close in Texas.

Any intelligently run Presidential campaign will be geared toward the electoral vote, not the popular vote. The popular vote doesn't mean anything.

Switch to a popular vote and then the popular vote will mean something.

We are a nation of 50 member states.

31 of those 50 member states voted for Donald Trump and their constitutionally apportioned Electoral College votes equalling 312 are being certified and cast for Donald J Trump. This is 58% of the EC votes allocated to those 31 states.

That's the end of the story. The popular vote does not matter. We are a constitutional Republic of 50 member states.
