Google must lop off one of their arms because they are a "monopoly". I hate Google but no one is forced to use Chrome or Google search.

They also might be forced to sell their OS.

Quote:

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has demanded that Alphabet Inc.'s GOOGL GOOG Google divest its Chrome browser to dismantle its monopoly on online search. This move is part of broader efforts to restore competition in the search market.

What Happened: Prosecutors have demanded that Google divest its Chrome browser and share search data with competitors to dismantle its monopoly on online search. These actions were proposed in a court filing on Wednesday.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) and state antitrust enforcers suggested that Google must also consider selling its Android operating system if other measures fail. The proposals aim to regulate Google for up to 10 years through a committee appointed by a federal court in Washington.

Considering most browsers are chrome(chromium) now, it doesn't matter.

Google can just open source it and say piss off.

Microsoft Edge Uses Chromium

Microsoft Edge, the web browser developed by Microsoft, has undergone a significant transformation. In 2020, Microsoft announced that it would be switching the underlying engine of Edge from its proprietary EdgeHTML to Chromium, the same open-source engine used by Google Chrome.

As usual, the feds are late to the party. In the last 3-6 months, Google's search algorithm has tanked. The results are becoming meaningless. Information is no longer meaningful; what you see is more ad-based sites, with many of the top results being fake news and clickbait sites.

A few things could be happening at Google right now:

1) They've known the feds were coming after them and they have made basic internet searching a painful process so when they hand over the current search methodology, the feds have a bundle of garbled ad-driven code.

2) They are shedding the search business and pivoting to making their AI service, Gemini, the flagship search product.

3) Moving to a much more ad-first search result model to squeeze out money.

In any event, OpenAI is the current standard for obtaining straight up information-based searching. The bias in GenAI is not up for debate, but it is FACT that OpenAI ChatGPT overtook Google in information seeking across the Internet in less than a year.

Essentially we are back to square one (or maybe square two/three) for obtaining information as Google is no longer providing that service in a meaningful way. Put yourself back in 2005 when Wikipedia was becoming mainstream. That's basically where we are again.

ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini are the three avenues which have surfaced to provide information, but as always hard copies should be obtained to validate facts (as much as anything written down can be trusted) ideas and hypotheses. Gemini's repeated failures for launching GenAI imagery really put them in distant third place, and it is almost like it is being done on purpose.

Google is a search monopoly

We were "blacklisted" for 2 weeks from their Search, and they won't tell you why. Our revenue dropped by 50%.

F*** those *******s.

I thought by now most searches had incorporated AI.

I like that they generally label the AI generated results as such and include some reference links. I wasn't aware the level of AI search integration varied so widely though.

Yup, Google has changed their SEO algorithms, and is trying to get folks to buy from their Merchant center (direct competition to Amazon)
Nothing wrong there.
Here is the monopoly part :
Because google is updating their algorithms, everyone's ROAS (return on ad spend) is reducing dramatically. So companies are having to significantly increase their ad-spend to generate the same revenue as before. That's pretty convenient for google, isn't it?
"Change" the algorithm - make it ****tier and force all their customers to pay more for a less valuable product? That screams monopoly

No not at all. Safari is Apples's browser. Brave is based on Chromium but has more built in security and privacy functions. I'm never bothered with ads and pop ups. I also run it on Linux but would think it would work the same on Apple and Windows

Home grown based on latest gpt models is what I use professionally. I cannot share our prompts, though.

You can do a quick search and find some really good ones, though!

Oof.

I'm telling you right now, companies that go too far in resisting will fall behind quickly over the next 2 years. Trust me- it's going to be blown open.

Imagine sitting down and prompting 'today I need to X, Y, Z, and prepare a presentation or a plan for A, B, please get these done.'

It won't be far off from this.

That said, I absolutely understand and agree with the resistance, b/c it IS a major IP and security problem.

But, the problem will fail forward, not go back.

Google is a search monopoly

There are numerous legacy search engines out there, and many are bult into browsers, like Edge and Brave. No one is forced to use Chrome or Google search. BING even indexes on its own!

You know what's happening now? Many people are now using ChatGPT and other generative AI search engines instead of Google for a lot of searches. How can that be if they are a monopoly?

This is a ridiculous ruling.

Brave (chromium) or Librewolf (firefox fork) are my two suggestions to limit the Google damage. I use both to avoid google as much as possible because they are unethical.

Generative AI could eventually kill google, but it's a fraction of the worlds search percentage. The DOJ is making the case that Google pays mobile phone manufacturers to preload Chrome, and make google the default search engine. It can do that because of its financial clout (and purported monopoly). it does that on Apple and Android devices.

That is also what got Microsoft in trouble with IE (maybe 15 years ago?)

It's not a "search" engine, it's a curated response engine that gives what it wants and hides the rest.
