This needs to be addressed. It's gone on for far too long!

Pompous Euros snub their nose at us fat Americans.

Like they're better, more sophisticated, superior.

Well, **** them. They should thank us for not having to speak German as their first language.

Having said that... I have no solution for the expensive drug cost today. It's the capitalism and greed at its best. And we live in it.

They would have been better off speaking German. In a few generations they'll be speaking Arabic.

Unfortunately, this is not true either. We are far down the road towards socialism, just not as far as Europe.

Because of us. Without the US supplying the allies, the thousand year Reich would still be in charge of Europe. And Europe would be speaking German.

I am certain they could come up with a solution to the Islam question.

It's not just free riding, the EU sets price controls/caps on pharmaceuticals and drug manufacturers pass those costs on to the U.S. taxpayers which we keep paying like a bunch of suckers.

Ironically, it's not as much capitalism to blame as it is socialism. The reason the rest of the world gets to access our pharmaceuticals at cheaper costs, while we pay a LOT more, is because of socialized medicine capping the costs of drugs.

It's a difficult situation. Legislation on our end to balance the scales would most likely make things worse:

1. Enact price controls, forcing costs down - Costs of certain drugs would drop, but a lot of newer more expensive therapies would be no longer be offered. R&D for rare diseases would be halted. Overall quality of Healthcare decreases.

2. Reverse price controls - Prevent drug companies from selling U.S. developed drugs X+% less to other countries to what they do here. A subset of key drugs would become cheaper here, while other countries would be forced to adjust their socialized healthcare to pay more. Less used drugs or drugs with alternatives manufactured outside the U.S. would be dropped, further increasing prices of those drugs here. Profit margin on rare disease drugs would take a hit due to the drop in foreign sales, so less of those would be developed going forward. Foreign pharmaceutical companies and their home countries might also retaliate, increasing the U.S. prices of drugs they produce. Enacting price controls on those foreign companies in return would result in low profit drugs no longer being sold here. Overall quality of healthcare goes down, with prices being higher or lower depending on the drug in question.

So basically the rest of the world is screwing us, and idk what we can reasonably do to stop it without substantial collateral damage. Pretty much anyone with a rare disease gets royally screwed if we try to do anything.

I don't think that is true anymore.

There is not an industry in the US more heavily regulated than Big Pharma.

Of course, we try to counter the regulations in the stupidest way possible, by half measures of socialized insurance. Either socialized health care or a completely privatized system would be cheaper. Both options have advantages and disadvantages.

Health care has three important qualities, and you can only pick two to emphasize.

Fast
Cost
Quality.

Get rid of the FDA. They have greatly increased the barrier to entry of new drug companies to enter the market and increase competition. Stop any form of government subsidy. Get rid of government research and make it all private. Let private organizations evaluate drugs for safety like they do efficiently in other fields.

We pay high costs because our government impose those high costs. Stop government from doing so.

Good post. Minor correction: the 3 pillars of Healthcare are affordability, accessibility, and quality. As you mentioned, you can only emphasize 2 of the 3.

Obamacare greatly increased the accessibility of Healthcare. As a result, affordability decreased a lot for those not in poverty, and quality decreased a little (longer wait times for specialists and procedures).

Universal Healthcare takes this further by forcing Healthcare to also be very affordable. As a result, there is a massive drop off in quality vs here. Wait times for specialists and procedures are very long, while a lot of expensive treatments are not allowed.

Our original, fully privatized Healthcare system emphasized affordability and quality, at the expensive of accessibility. That was the best system IMO, although it did need some tweaks to help make it more accessible. Unfortunately, Obamacare did so in the worst way possible, and is thus a massive failure.

How about simply allowing Americans to purchase "mail order" drugs from Canada, Mexico, and other countries? If that happens, drug costs in the US would be forced to come down to compete.

Speed of Healthcare and accessibility are not the same. Accessibility AFFECTS the speed of Healthcare, but being "fast" falls under Quality.

Accessibility is how easy it is to get Healthcare (ex: private insurance systems are less accessible, while socialized medicine is more accessible). It inversely affects the speed of Healthcare, because the more people that have access, the less availability there is for procedures and providers. Hth.

How does something become more affordable and less accessible?

Before Obamacare, less people had full access to Healthcare, because you needed private insurance to get the best treatments. However, that also meant that there were less sick people to burden private insurance companies, so they were able to keep premiums low.

Obamacare forced insurance companies to accept anyone that wanted insurance (increasing accessibility), but that meant taking on a large number of expensive sick people without having enough healthy people to offset the costs. As a result, everyone's premiums went up (i.e. Healthcare became less affordable).

So essentially subsidized healthcare for the poor and sick. I wonder why that increased prices?

Sadly, liberals never consider or else care about the economic consequences of their idiotic ideas, and the vast majority of brainwashed morons that vote for them are incapable of understanding the problem.
