I believe we were heading for a recession regardless of these layoffs. Everyone has to navigate recessions in their careers. The Biden Administration has been kicking the can down the road and the road has run out. Hopefully, Trump will be able to navigate it. The Trump administration will need a communication strategy too. No one has been discussing the incoming Medicare premium increases because the Biden administration has been raiding it either.

the tough part is going to be if those bloated agencies are actually enforcing laws. If you have fewer people than you practically need to enforce a law, that leads to selective enforcement of laws, which is a whole other opportunity for corruption.

You need the scope of these federal agencies to shrink and the workforce to align with that scope, not just cut heads.

Every agency should have a core mission, and anything that grows beyond that core and outside the scope of the federal government per the constitution should be defunded and agency workforces adjusted accordingly.

for example, what does the Department of Education have to do with the federal government? Where in the constitution is that scope by the federal government explicitly prescribed? Oh wait, it isn't? Buy-Bye...

Vivek was being interviewed this morning and pretty much confirmed that they're leaning on the overturn of Chevron as support for the reduction and elimination of agencies.

Just reading into it I'm guessing that if the enabling or creation legislation for each agency does not specifically call out a responsibility or function, and an agency has grown into overseeing a subject matter outside that legal purview, then the DOGE team will look at that as an overstep and pruning opportunity.

The severance package comes with signing away the right to sue. If you want to do a cost benefit analysis, it really comes down to how much are you saving in legal battles and settlements by paying a generous amount up front. Put people to a decision on whether to accept a fat check and a long runway to land in the private sector, or risk a drawn out legal battle hoping for a settlement that may be worth more.

If the cuts are extensive enough, the argument for discrimination is minimized. "200,000 people got let go, but my case is special because I'm XXX race or XXX gender", not a winning argument.

This will help but the outcry is going to be so incredibly loud. This is turning everything on its head. This is the shake up of a generation and a lot of people are going to be very angry. It's going to take a lot of mental stamina to keep moving forward.
