If all they do is review taxes and do refund work, should this department be on the chopping block? Computers and AI can handle these mundane tasks very well and hand off to another enforcing department.

Yeah, they certainly can, but the IRS is running heavy metal mainframes that were obsolete decades ago. Spending money to modernize the IRS isn't really a political winner. Plus, there is a entire industry of tax prep services with a vested interest in keeping it difficult to file your taxes.

Should be abolished and replaced with an 8-10% (absolute maximum) consumption tax.

This would probably be the only way to keep it "simple".

The issue with taxes is how many things are funded by various taxes and how many different revenue streams you can have.

Income tax, state tax, local tax, property tax, estate tax, sales tax, etc. People would never vote for getting rid of all those and raising sales tax to 30% to cover it. Even if it worked out to be the same amount.

People have ordinary income, capital gains, dividend income, business income, etc. You have capital losses, depreciation, business losses. Investors are going to be pissed if suddenly they lose their nice tax bracket vs W2 employees.

It is a monster but it is a monster created by 100 years of lobbyists and wealthy individuals. And has created millions of related jobs. It would be difficult if not impossible to destroy.

The IRS needs to be sunset.

Clean up/Simplify the tax code. Use AI to send you a tax bill at the end of the year, and how it came to that calculation. Pay that amount, or protest.

Protest would then be like how you actually file taxes now.

Gut that department of 95% of the pencil-pushing terrorists and keep working to find alternative ways to find this F'd up government.

Having the government tell me what my taxes are seems like a terrible idea

They already know brother, they are just waiting for you to submit the wrong answer

Target conservatives and use government overreach and scare tactics to maintain compliance. They are a cancer.

My wife's ex tried to go back and file something against her and it took her over 40 hours to get it overturned. The first 10 she was trying to find out why she all the sudden owed $10k from 3 years ago and when she finally found out it took another 10 hours on what she needed to file. 15 hours of paperwork and having friends/family write letters and another 5 printing 100+ pages 3 times and mailing it to the IRS. 6 months later she gets a letter back from the IRS saying she owes nothing.

So much inefficiency.

We are well past the point that the government working for the citizens

Another reason we need a states convention to repeal the 16th amendment. And the 17th. Return control of DC to the states.

Right now they are trying to steal more money from my parents estate. Money my parents amassed over a lifetime, paid income taxes on, then paid capital gains taxes on. Now that they're gone and can't defend themselves, the government thinks they should be able to confiscate it rather than it go to the intended heirs. This is after they tried to question the final income tax return for my mother which was filed after she passed. That's right - you pay income tax after you die. Then what's left over is subject to estate tax. Thats what the IRS does. Evil mother****ers.
Must have been a big estate!

National sales tax, fair tax, flat tax, etc……..will do away with 3/4 of the IRS.

Re: flat tax, 3/4 of the IRS exists to determine what is taxable income. Replacing a tax rate look-up table with a flat tax rate isn't going to shrink the bureaucracy if there's any adjustment from gross income to taxable income, which is pretty much unavoidable.

Can you imagine the job loss in this country with a flat tax? Or, even better, a flat sales tax where ZERO paperwork is required?

For our business, I do the state sales tax form myself. However, all of the following touch my IRS filings:

Some IRS goober
Accountant
Clerk
Secretary
FedEx/UPS

Other businesses also have a bookkeeper in there somewhere.
Also, Tax Attorneys get involved alot of times.

Because of the different businesses I own, and how they each reflect in the tax code, the IRS makes the exact same mistake on my personal return every year. And every year my CPA has to send the exact same letter and it bounces around the exact same way, with the same additional letters back and forth. It is always resolved (expect for this past year, even more idiots) and I always get my refund a year late or more.

Worthless piece of **** organization.

I hope DOGE fixes it. Better yet, flat tax this mother ****er and we can fire 90% of them.

I don't know why they have so many, but know a guy who focused on go after actual criminals who they are able to catch by breaking tax laws. He worked in Miami so dealt with crime orgs and would go into an office and arrest the criminal and had to be armed given who he was dealing with.

I'm on board that - if someone evades the IRS - the IRS should be required to go to the police with their case in order to get the police/Feds involved. The IRS shouldn't be the tax collectors and police as well.
