…..instead of John Cornyn…..is that is makes it much more possible for someone like Ken Paxton to primary Cornyn in 2026.

It's already gonna be hard to oust someone as deeply entrenched in DC as Cornyn, but it would be basically impossible to primary-out the Majority Leader.

And yes, getting a RINO like John Thune is an absolute betrayal of the voters who gave Trump a mandate to govern. It so clearly should have been Rick Scott.

But at least this further opens the door for Paxton vs Cornyn in '26.

Do you have any reason to believe Paxton wants to run against Cornyn?

A friend from SD said it's a win-win because either Thune will get onboard the Trump Train or he won't and he's one of the easier senators to primary because of SD's small metro areas.

(Not saying he's right...just passing that along. I hope Thune goes along because that's much more important than getting him out of the Senate)

Paxton would get slaughtered by Cornyn. I could see Cornyn not running again however and there being a open primary.

Articles like this one: https://www.politico.com/news/2023/09/20/ken-paxton-texas-john-cornyn-senate-seat-00117289

And rumors that Paxton was being considered for Trump's AG and that Cornyn was gonna work to block his nomination/appointment in the Senate.

Paxton won't beat Cornyn. Wish he could but I don't see it. Abbott could but I doubt he runs. Maybe one of the House members but it's high risk for them. It's going to be very hard to get rid of Cornyn unless he retires.

Paxton barely made it out of his own primary last time. Cornyn may be unpopular on F16, but he has the largest margin of victory of nearly a statewide Texas office.

Barring scandal, I doubt he ever loses.

This just isn't true. He got 42% of the vote in the primary (Bush was second with 22.8%) and 68% in the runoff.

Cornyn is extremely popular with the broader electorate, probably moreso than any Texan politician.

Elon already said he will fully fund the challenger in any primary if they go against Trump. Just little info here, Musk is worth over 300 billion now, throwing 50 million to defeat a RINO is pocket change. Get your sh** together or you're out

I think Cornyn thought that he was heir apparent for the majority leader position once Mitch resigned and republicans regained control of the Senate. He spent his career playing the traditional politics game to become majority leader.

I can see that him losing the position and seeing the nationwide negativity toward him getting the position might make him reconsider if he wants to continue being a Senator. It might be a good time for the Good Senator from Texas to hang up his hat. Hopefully he isn't so upset that he intentionally disrupts progress of the Trump administration.

He was first elected to public office 1984.

Return of the Jedi came out in 1983, which is the only reference point I have for the time period in which he began his political career. Well, maybe Hurricane Alicia.

I first met him at a campaign event in College Station in 1997, which in itself seems like a long time ago.

WTF has he EVER done in the Senate? We see Cruz fighting the good fight every day. You never hear **** from Cornyn. He seems a lot more interested in currying favor with the uniparty than the voters.

This is correct. I also live in SD and we are all watching Thune closely. Don't forget that Thune got in the Senate by defeating sitting minority leader, Tom Daschle in 2004.

How do you think Cruz got such good committee slots as a junior senator when he was elected?

My concern is if Paxton were to beat Cornyn in the primary, then the Soros $$ would be strong for his dem opposition. A lot of low info voters would vote for Alred over Paxton and the media spin would totally be what a crook Paxton is, plus that Paxton is just a meanie. "Hands across the aisle" Alred might just win in that scenario. And then we'd hear constantly how the dems flipped Texas and now "Texas is in play". Ugh.

I don't like squishy RINO Cornyn either, but I'll take him over Beeto or All-wrong any day. Be careful what you wish for.

There is a reason Soros targets Cruz instead of Cornyn. Left loves them Cornyn.

Best scenerio is do get that ****head out in the public.

1. Cornyn appointed Senate leader
2. He tries to block ANYTHING Trump does.
3. Trump goes after him
4. hat FINALLYL pisses off enough Texas Republicans that that dip**** is primaried
5, One more of the swamp is drained.

But, since it's not Cornyn, he can continue to destroy this country behind closed doors.
