Honestly, I would rather see this as a new permanent office within the federal government. I know that seems counter intuitive to waste. But I'd like to see a cabinet position, "Secretary of Government Efiiciency." Rather than have two private business people influencing decisions, this deserves much more attention and having a cabinet position makes this move last beyond President Trump's next four years.

A permanent agency just evolves into another bureaucracy that eventually would become another dysfunctional waste of taxpayer money.

Two outsiders looking at the system as a whole would have more freedom to cut unnecessary agencies and programs.
How about some retired insiders who DGAF, have nothing to lose, and know where the skeletons are? I'll volunteer for a 2 year appointment in his "department" before it is dissolved. Nobody above the rank of GS-12 should be allowed to help. At GS-13 it seems folks stop spelling "field" f-i-e-l-d, and start spelling it "m-e".

Give Elon a call. I am sure that he could use a lot of volunteer help.

Chevron deference?
Bruh. Yes. It basically established that if an agency had more working knowledge than the court, say EPA on emissions, they could blindly enforce their own interpretation of law because the justices aren't climatologists (or whatever field applies). It's stupid. Always was. And now it's gone.

We will also have a leaderboard for most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars. This will be both extremely tragic and extremely entertaining

In a column next to the wasteful spending, they should list the person(s) responsible for authoring or authorizing the expenditure by name. Keep a running tab on the biggest abusers so we the voters can do our part getting rid of porkmeisters.

My only concern is Vivek and Elon are both super alpha "I am the BOSS" types. How will they work together? How can a department have 2 bosses?
I think the fact it's cutting waste and not building something to fight over. I don't see one of them backstabbing the other to save more government.

Yes, but super successful and smart guys have super egos too. I think a better idea would be to give each 100% responsibility over a single department so he can run it as he likes. I don't think having a company with 2 CEOs is a good idea.
Energy Transfer says Hi. They seem to do well.

So does Enterprise Products

I love the focus on cutting waste. I hope the saved money is used towards paying off debt. We cannot keep spending forever.

1. Balance the budget
2. Pay down the debt.

It is not impossible. Just needs political will.

I don't think Vivek and Elon are running a department, but I could be wrong. I think they're more like consultants advising Trump on where there are inefficiencies.

They are running a new department.

Well, let's see. I wish them well and am excited. Both are smart guys. We can only win if they succeed.

Our Federal Govt. is so big and bloated, if these two are successful like we hope they are, the unemployment rate is going to spike over 8%! It will be the most glorious 8% unemployment rate ever.

Cutting cost doesn't necessarily mean cutting the budget. So I'll be curious to watch how this plays out and what the feedback loop will be to actually get the budget to reflect the cuts.

Also, how about giving bonuses of some sort to department heads that actually spend LESS than their budget voluntarily? There needs to be a culture of cutting costs and increasing efficiency without having to have DOGE make the cuts for you.

Just like it's almost impossible to get markets to move against the ingrained incentives, governments will always move in the direction of maximizing budgets. That is why any growth of budget/new departments/responsibilities should always and forever be a no-go.

The only way to cut inefficiencies permanently is to eliminate the responsibility government has in that area.

I'll be that guy and point out that little cuts here and there are nice but unless something is done about unfunded mandates none of this will really matter.

The blueprint has already been drawn by Milei.

Start with that and I'm assuming Trump and him will have a good relationship, which should scare thousands of worthless bureaucrats and their grunts living the good life. I bet Elon and Vivek are big fans as well. Get them all together asap.

Great point someone had including the author/supporter of every single program listed on the Wall of Shame for most outlandish spends. Shine a bright light on the a-holes who use OUR money to stay in office.

NOW is the rare opportunity to clean this thing up and save the country.

do the ritaarded jack asses who think they're clever by pointing out there are two leaders for the "efficiency department" really not understand that the richest man in the world and other tech millionaire probably aren't taking up two full time government salaried bureaucrat positions so that they can slash government bureaucracies?

My question would be agencies that are codified. Do you just strip them to the bare bones and force people to work what other people do? If you can't get rid of them, can you re-locate them to other places?

Gamify government spending?

Quote:

Elon Musk wants to gamify the act of slashing government spending and experts said it's a savvy strategy to get people to pay attention to a dry subject.

The Tesla CEO said this week that he plans to post a public "leaderboard for the most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars."

"This will be both extremely tragic and extremely entertaining," Musk posted, along with a promise to let the public weigh in on specific potential cuts.
Quote:

Musk said all the activities of DOGE which he will lead alongside businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, and which is named after a Musk-linked cryptocurrency would be published online in the name of transparency.
Quote:

The board promises entertainment, competition, and interactivity marketed to a group with skin in the game: the American public with an eye to their tax dollars.

And it would turn an often wonky exercise government budgeting into a participatory game of winners and losers. In the process, it would also likely give Musk a valuable prize: our attention.
Transparency and attention are two things useless bureaucrats do not want. Sign me up!

She just doesn't like the point.

Those government unions and federal kickbacks don't contribute their own money to her campaign. Got to collect that government grift.

That would get rid of all of them. It's against the law for Fed employees to strike - ask the air traffic controllers how it worked out for them.
