Nobody flies Southwest any more. They're too crowded.

Are there many, if any, examples of a corporate raider coming in and making a company better for its employees and customers?
  • Nobody flies Southwest any more.
  • They're too crowded.

For those that have followed investment activism... Elliott is among the worst

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/elliott-requests-special-meeting-southwest-123348286.html

Quote:

Elliott has nominated eight directors to the Southwest board as it seeks to replace the same number of incumbents. Its candidates include Michael Cawley, the former deputy chief executive officer of Ryanair Holdings Plc; David Cush, ex-CEO of Virgin America; and Gregg Saretsky, former CEO of WestJet.
They recently went after Texas Instruments and now they are looking to replace Southwest's Board.

Some of you many say, "Southwest hasn't been the same since Herb." Just know many companies have to fend off investors like Elliott who only seek to make money anyway they can.

Southwest is the Dollar General of the airlines.

Does it really matter if they go away?

This is not nearly as good of an analogy as you think. Dollar General serves a purpose and it would matter to a lot of people if they went away. Clearly you don't live in a rural area where DG is the only option for groceries and general merchandise.

Southwest sucks now. In no way are they a budget airline anymore, half the plane preboards (generally because they are simply morbidly obese), and they are delayed / late more times than not.

on my most recent flight, a large family was B boarding. when they said "family boarding" all 8 of them walked up. the podium lady said "no. one adult may board with two children." then they allllll tried to board again and she said no.

only one of them spoke english and it wasn't good enough to relay what was going on so they just stood there.

that has been a problem for a while where you could be B1 and watch 30 people board after A and before you for whatever reason. I'm hoping they're cracking down pretty hard now.

Covid killed Southwest just like many other businesses. Mask nazis and generally unpleasant workers killed the whole "friendly skies" experience.
Seven and three are ten, not only now, but forever. There has never been a time when seven and three were not ten, nor will there ever be a time when they are not ten. Therefore, I have said that the truth of number is incorruptible and common to all who think. — St. Augustine

I learned about fake masks from Southwest. Game changer for me.

Illogical statements... Nobody flies Southwest? ... then how are they crowded?

SW has been better than the other airlines for me, at least from Texas destinations. Though, with these changes, they may just become the same as everyone else.

I have flown SWA about 40 times this year and may have been delayed once. Last year was bad early in the year but then got better.

I don't get all the squawking about people getting on early. In my experience it doesn't delay the flight so I don't give a rats ass.

Yep, its the family boarding that pisses me off. I am ok with it if its one parent to one small child. What I have been seeing of late large groups with kids that are in Jr. High boarding during family boarding. Its the same issue with the wheelchairs, one granny using a wheelchair and 6 other family members getting on with her.

The only thing that makes SW worth it is the no bag fees, which will remain. The open seating makes boarding take longer, and their lack of on board amenities like power in the seats and screens on the seatbacks is a downside as well that others have at the same price point.

They also won't use a beverage cart so it takes longer to get drinks because the flight attendant has to take everyone's order, then walk to the back and pour drinks 12 at a time and walk them back to the passengers.

In the context of rural America, I agree with your assessment.

At the deer lease, Dollar General is our friend - so I stand corrected.

They are the Palais Royal of the airways.
