This is from the Observer a leftist rag so bear that in mind.

https://www.texasobserver.org/texas-dps-surveillance-tangle-cobwebs/

Quote:

In June, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) signed an acquisition plan for a 5-year, nearly $5.3 million contract for a controversial surveillance tool called Tangles from tech firm PenLink, according to records obtained by the Texas Observer through a public information request. The deal is nearly twice as large as the company's $2.7 million two-year contract with the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Tangles is an artificial intelligence-powered web platform that scrapes information from the open, deep, and dark web. Tangles' premier add-on feature, WebLoc, is controversial among digital privacy advocates. Any client who purchases access to WebLoc can track different mobile devices' movements in a specific, virtual area selected by the user, through a capability called "geofencing." Users of software like Tangles can do this without a search warrant or subpoena. (In a high-profile ruling, the Fifth Circuit recently held that police cannot compel companies like Google to hand over data obtained through geofencing.) Device-tracking services rely on location pings and other personal data pulled from smartphones, usually via in-app advertisers. Surveillance tech companies then buy this information from data brokers and sell access to it as part of their products.

Of course Dems will oppose anything used to help seal the border. But I think this tech is out of the bottle. Law enforcement has found a work around to track everybody's movements via their cellphones without a court order. For better or worse.
Trump will fix it.

People in Texas like to think of themselves as independent and free. But we always seem to keep a healthy dose of nanny state. If you havent lived many other places, you likely dont even realize it's an issue.

Hopefully the courts will keep this kind stuff neutered, as best as possible.

How do they get the data? Cell companies cell it to them? I would assume they're the only ones with ping info from towers.

Google will for sure sell it. Apple claims to not, but who knows.

I know any vehicle using CarPlay also (in most cases) allows the vehicle to track location and use data and send to the car manufacturer. No one really knows exactly what is transmitted and how it's used, but when you read the fine print on Ford for example, you agree to let them do it by virtue of using car play.

Most apps try to track your data. Again, Apple has cracked down on this and forces some opt ins on each app, but the default is for any app to track everything.

But weren't we told cell phone tracking is useless when it's exposing Dem MIB mules?

If private companies are legally tracking it, it's not a 4th Amendment issue.. If they're selling the info to whomever will pay, should the police not be able to buy it, even though everyone else can?

That's the unfortunate effect of allowing ourselves to be tracked by anyone. To google etc, we are the product.

By the same reasoning, why not sell it to China? Iran? I'm sure Hamas' money is just as green too.

There may be a few exceptions, but most of the time this information is for commerce related endeavors. Police aren't marketing anything, really.

State and local law enforcement have no interest in tracking anyone's movements unless they're a criminal and under investigation.

I imagine you could pass a law saying foreign entities can't buy the info. Then they'll just use their American subsidies to buy the info.

You and your info is a product; It's for sale on the open and free market. Until the market demands it, it's too lucrative to stop.

I don't think this would help what is happening. From my understanding it is not from tracking when idle, its tracking from data while using your phone. So don't use your phone, no worries.

But if you load a page or an app with advertising Google is sending location info to advertisers (or some middle man) who is then re-selling that data (your location tied to your mac address/phone number/etc) to a third party like Tangles. This 3rd party is then re-selling that phone/location data to buyers including government organizations who no longer have to go through the courts to get that info because it is info they paid for in bulk that they can use at will. This 3rd party aggregates all the info it can get from these advertisers to then form a picture of where all you have been (and potentially when).

Its downright shady and sharing of location data together with identifying information should be illegal to re-sell like this IMO.

right im saying make it look like your phone never left the house

Or, make it look like your phone is everywhere at once

It would be a bit of cat and mouse to stay current... have to start looking for away randomize location data except for when its important to you.
