Put me in the category of not wanting AI to tell my Roomba to kill me at 3 am in the morning!

industrial automation equipment already had a thick layer of BS in all the datasheets. When the marketing campaigns are now advertising AI in basic commodity stuff like barcode readers the FOS flag goes up instantly instead of halfway through the spec sheet

When I see "AI" in product descriptions, I immediately assume it's bull**** and just hype, not that it's scary.

interesting study. One of the first to analyze this.

Wonder if the concern about deepfakes and whatnot is starting to permeate the average consumer.

Using the term 'artificial intelligence' in product descriptions reduces purchase intentions

Companies may unintentionally hurt their sales by including the words "artificial intelligence" when describing their offerings that use the technology, according to a study led by Washington State University researchers.

In the study, published in the Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management, researchers conducted experimental surveys with more than 1,000 adults in the U.S. to evaluate the relationship between AI disclosure and consumer behavior.

The findings consistently showed products described as using artificial intelligence were less popular, according to Mesut Cicek, clinical assistant professor of marketing and lead author of the study.

"When AI is mentioned, it tends to lower emotional trust, which in turn decreases purchase intentions," he said. "We found emotional trust plays a critical role in how consumers perceive AI-powered products."

Researchers also discovered that negative response to AI disclosure was even stronger for "high-risk" products and services, those which people commonly feel more uncertain or anxious about buying, such as expensive electronics, medical devices or financial services. Because failure carries more potential risk, which may include monetary loss or danger to physical safety, mentioning AI for these types of descriptions may make consumers more wary and less likely to purchase, according to Cicek.

Interesting. I just did a survey for someone that was getting a Masters Degree. It was on this exact subject.

I had the same results.

Upstairs, downstairs, and one more that gets stuck under the dining room table.

Remember when Nest thermostats turned your AC temperature up when it was hot outside so that the Google server farms didn't have to pay more money for electricity, in the name of saving the planet from global warning?

I'm not worried about Skynet. I just don't want to give corporations more ways to control my life for their profits and convenience.

I for one welcome our terminator overlords…

But seriously I hate anything that is smart controlled. The nest was such horse ****, my brother has a new mustang where he coudlnt start it because it had to update its software, I've seen fridges that have monitors and screens on them. It's all just garbage.

Give me a Toyota with basic tactile buttons and no keyless push to start

If it's something I need or want an AI for, then it is a positive. Otherwise I would tend to take it as marketing fluff which I interpret as condescending or irrelevant.

This is why I named mine after an AI gone rampant (Durandal). Still need a Tycho and Leela to complete the Marathon storyline.

AI in the big picture is still very new and in its infancy stage. Of course people are still weary of AI generated or backed technology right now.

Yeah, and to be fair, what we think of now as "AI" isn't really AI. It's what engineers call "parallel processing". I imagine the term will undergo some marketing changes over the years similar to the computer and cell phone.
