I'm assuming the athletes voted on it, but surely there was someone more deserving. I don't know if it is an age thing, but my interest in the Olympics has been trending downwards these last 12-15 years.

Of the ones you listed, only in '68 was it a case where the athletes being political were the story. The others were the actions of governments (or terrorists sponsored by governments).

Hell, you can go all the way back to 1906 when Peter O'Conner, an Irish athlete, who had to compete under the British flag, climbed a flag pole at the games and unfurled an Irish flag. There are many many examples of individual athletes protesting before or at the Olympic Games.

I like swimming, track, and one or two other things. I don't think I've ever watched Olympic basketball and I never will.

The Olympics by their very nature are inherently political on a macro scale.

What would be nice is if we sent athletes that actually appreciated and loved the USA.

We don't always do that.
