Quote:

In a shocking move on Wednesday, the International Olympic Committee moved to crush U.S. inquiries into a Chinese sports doping scandal, by threatening to reject Salt Lake City's bid to host the Winter Games in 2034.

In a series of fierce statements coordinated by IOC President Thomas Bach, top IOC committee members blasted U.S. officials for opening probes into handling of the China case by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

The China scandal involves 23 swimmers who tested positive for banned performance enhancing substances on at least two occasions prior to the Tokyo Summer Games in 2021.

WADA officials have acknowledged keeping the test results secret until they were revealed by journalists this spring.

Eleven of those athletes are expected to compete again in Paris.

WADA president Witold Banka said at a press conference in April his organization did nothing wrong.

"At every stage, WADA followed all due process and diligently investigated. If we had to do it over again now, we would do exactly the same thing," Banka said.

On Wednesday, members of the IOC said they agreed with WADA's decision to accept a claim by Chinese officials that the positive tests were the result of accidental contamination.

But the case has sparked a growing firestorm of criticism in the U.S., from members of Congress, sports doping experts, and Olympic athletes.

USADA's Tygart, whose organization monitors and penalizes American athletes if they cheat, testified before a House panel in June that WADA had failed for years to properly punish Chinese and also Russian sports teams that regularly use performance-enhancing drugs.

It's really incredible. We bench our best female sprinter in the last Olympics because of marijuana use, while China (and usually Russia) are getting away with failed steroid tests with IOC support.

What a joke. We will still crush them anyways.

On a lighter note; the Paris Mayor just pulled a Kramer by swimming in the French equivalent of the East River.

I'm unabashedly a huge US Olympics fan. It's awesome. Some of the greatest moments in sports history took place there. Sorry you are no fun.

IOC obviously is holding out for bribe money if history is any guide.
I hope they love their winter games in Kazakhstan.

FIFA is the definition of corruption.

I remember when cheering for your nation, having pride in your country's flag was a great thing shared by nearly all Americans.

Now we are told by progressives at every turn that America sucks, Nationalism is the devil. We should change everything about our country. We are racist, sexist, homophobic and stupid. AMERICA is cast as the worst place on earth by these same people.

Then they mock Americans who don't line up to wear red white & blue clothes and wave flags at a sporting event they approve of.

Wave an American flag on a college campus and you might get called a fascist or worse you could be attacked physically.
But if you do it for soccer or the long jump you are a patriot. Just make sure and burn the flag when you get home.

Yep

Hosts lose on every one. Sucks that SLC, and probably the nation, will have to foot the bill like before and end up losing money. Again.

Both. I work for a global professional services company and it is against our policy to contract with either organization.

Actually was in Park City last year and the tour we took the guide pointed out they actually have a lot of the infrastructure in place already to host the games.

Yes, they'll be lucky to break even, but the facilities, lodging, transportation, etc. is mostly there now.

They'll have to add some stuff, but not build all new stuff like a lot of venues.

I agree with this for the games back in the day (up into the 90's). But it's nothing like it used to be now that professional athletes are mostly just competing for $$$ instead national glory. For older people, the difference is huge and it makes the current version seem ho-hum.

Also, the cold war added extra intensity that is currently missing.

The 2002 Salt Lake games produced a profit for the state. Most Olympics lose for the host. That one did not.

Always.

FIFA officials took bribes to allow Qatar to use slaves to build their stadiums and play in the middle of summer.

Contestant: I will take "Modern Mafia" for $500 Alex (or whoever he has been replaced with)

Alex: These organizations, while lining their own pockets, are accused of shaking down governments and making political payoffs all across the globe.

Contestant: Who are the DNC, WHO, UN, IOC, and FIFA?

Alex: Correct!

The DNC is probably the most corrupt but the UN, WHO, FIFA and IOC are not far behind

I know NOTHING!!!!

this. If the IOC is the equivalent of the ladies in a high income PTA skimming a few hundred dollars for a nice wine dinner from the operating account, FIFA is the mafia.

We actually made money during the 2002 Olympics. Of course that was because the US taxpayer subsidized so much of the physical infrastructure and security arrangements.

It's a tie between FIFA and IOC.

UN is the most corrupt multinational organization . There are many orgs tied for second place though: Interpol, IMF, WHO, WEF, IOC, FIFA etc.

Yes, I enjoyed it better when the atheletes were great amateurs. I just do not like most professional sports.

Since most of the facilities are already built, I would bet SLC will turn a profit like LA did back in the 80s.

Thanks to federal monies.

The last one that stood on its own, and made money (for real) , was LA in 1984. They used a ton of existing stuff.

The most tardtastic was Sochi.

I recently read that break dancing... BREAK DANCING (they're calling it "breaking") is an official sport for this Olympics... and Snoop Dog is going to be one of the final torch bearers.

What the hell is happening w/ the Olympics?

Guess they're desperately trying to get viewer's eyes to watch.
