I'm going to guess this: nobody on the security detail thought that the shooter would climb the designated security headquarters post to take the shot. I imagine the thought of the possibility didn't cross their mind that the shooter would not know or care that the building had officers inside.

They didn't take any measure to actually secure the roof. They didn't post people around the building or have someone at a post where they could observe the roof.

The explosives were likely homemade, bomb making materials were confiscated from the parents home.

Explosives? Fireworks? Tannerite? Gunpowder? A kid can make a simple bomb. I wouldn't put too much into that. Gives the shooter too much credit. It's frankly almost amazing the cops didn't catch him, but Hanlon's razor applies. Complacency, incompetence, inexperience with the locals, poor coordination, and maybe dumb rules for follow ups and engagement, and for delaying the event to investigate a threat.

I made the pitch up in my post. I have no idea what it really is so just used something very benign...

I had to hear it with my own ears to believe it. The US almost plunged into a dark & dangerous timeline because slightly “sloped roof.”

Doesn't look more than a 5/12 pitch. It actually looks closer to 3 or 4 on 12, aka, not steep

Looks like the shooter probably used google maps or similar to pre-survey the site, then checked it out on the ground and determined no ladder was needed and the line of sight was good and the security had a coverage gap.

He then left and got is weapon and returned.

Saw a former SS agent on TV this morning. She said that there is always a command center with the liasions for each agency involved in security. They are together in the same room and communicate via their distinct communications channels at all times. So if a local PD radioed in that a man had been spotted on that roof, the SS officer in commnd could immediately alert the sniper teams on which grid and zone to look while simultaneously confirming with the counterparts it was not a friendly up there.

That commander on scene is the person who knows what happened. I'd wager there is some type of recording as well.

Which makes it all the more curious about the story of the cop who did get up to the roof, whether by ladder or boosted by another officer, that there should have been radio contact before that saying they were going to take a look. Again, grids and zones. The entire site is mapped out and where security is stationed is mapped out. Those maps are in the command center so they could pinpoint which officers were where and which were responding to the reports of a man on the roof and where located.

I cant speak for the SS, but 27 years ago my lil rag tag unit kept a log book of all voice coms into and out of the TOC between infil and exfil+. All resupplys and STANO dumps were also recorded. Digital bursts recorded. I rarely worked the TOC but that information RECORDED is vital. Sometimes it was just us and one other LEA, other times it was us and 8+ LEAs local, state, fed, with a liaison from every significantly contributing entity in the TOC or at least a radio way to communicate with all.

In an event like this they would absolutely have both a Commander (HMFIC) and 1 or more COMS managers coordinating communications.

27 years ago we could pass out radios to everyone, INFIL them over the AIR, with Channel 1 ALL call, Channel 2 only us, Channel 3 only Air, Channel 4 a mix and on and on and on. The TOC always sounded like a drone(s) with all the battery chargers burring away for hours, days, weeks, and even months.

Beyond incompetent if this wasn't being done and with todays technology should be automatic and on a visual timeline providing a clear & concise who, what, where, when. just like 911 software does.

Will the public ever see it in this case only God knows.

The biggest concern of a roof with that slope is if it could hold up & shed the snow in some unusually heavy winter event. And like others have pointed out, you already had snipers on a roof with more slope than that.

That roof might the only thing that they might be able to get any of the BS they're slinging to stick to, only because of it's ever so gentle slope...

She's made two interviews. Both with ABC. None on FNC.

First interview she didn't want to comment about an ongoing investigation, so that was worthless

After that blew up in her face see had a second interview and shifted blame to local LEA and lame excuses for the lack of security and lapses in protocol
