My FIL said that he felt like she was back in plenty of time, given that we didn't know the path was moving as far north as it eventually did. He does this **** for a living, so I'll take his word. She was back by Sunday evening, and FIL left our dinner early Sunday evening for another meeting/briefing that lasted well in to Monday.

I don't get why her being gone and returning is such an issue, and we don't feel the same about Abbott.
I don't understand this claim. We knew for days before hand it seemed to be aiming for Texas.
We knew Sunday morning that it had moved far enough up the coast to threaten the Houston area.

Could Harris county have a more incompetent leader, regardless of the storm.

Dora is the very definition of dumbassserry, no experience, complete hack thrust into a leadership position really dumb constituents or many who just vote D for the sake of voting D because they can't think for themselves.

Possibly the worst elected official with by far the least amount of any general experience and definitely zero leadership experience in a role to lead a county as large as Harris. Insane world.
I think there's plenty to criticize LH about, but...

My father-in-law is on the Houston Emergency Planning Committee, and here's how those meetings go when something like a hurricane happens. They go around the table and talk to people from Public Works, Water, Parks and Rec and CenterPoint, among others. As they make their way around, each group talks about where they are staged and what the response time should and could be. So if CP...a vendor...says that they are ready to go and can provide information on where crews are staged and how many outside crews they will be taking on from other states, and what substations can handle a re-route should one be needed, etc, all you can do is take them at their word. "We're good" doesn't mean she's not done this.

She may not be the best in the world at her job and I did not vote for her, but her telling DP that "We're good" after being briefed a number of times over from her committee is not a failure on her part. Unfortunately for her, she's where the buck stops.

Hidalgo doesn't have the intelligence, skill set, or experience to lead in a crisis. Her job is not "go around the table and talk". It is to ask the right questions and find gaps and weaknesses.

"All you can do is take them at their word" and "she was briefed by her committee" is an enormous cop out. That is her failure of leadership which impacts Harris County residents. There is a cost to someone in her position not having the intelligence, skill set, and experience to perform at the high level necessary to be the Harris County Judge.

Are we talking about LH or Governor Abbott?
Abbott was on state business and he is not the head of emergency response for Harris County.

Why do liberals never take responsibility for anything?

I knew Saturday at the latest but was pretty sure Houston was gonna be on the bad side by Friday. I was in east texas and talking to a local fishing guide about incoming weather chances.

I guess you'll have to define what "threaten" means to you. I found hurricane and flood warnings for Houston as far back as the Friday before landfall.

Your FIL is an idiot if he thinks it was okay to be out of town when a storm is potentially headed towards Harris County.

If mattress Mack and the Chronicle can't get Dora out, I don't see who can. There is an obvious rift between Dora and Whitmire and he does not need to budge. She is a complete moron that has no business in government.

This is not surprising. She's an idiot.
She is an idiot...but why did Patrick need her permission? He should have taken over the decision...especially based on pervious storms. Its not like we haven't had recent history of enormous cluster f's.

Pointing fingers for points right now is just dumb. Put out the fire and then attack each other for political points.
Seriously?? You're trying to turn this back on Dan???

He can't just unilaterally take over the county's emergency response unit.

This is one of your more foolish takes to attempt to attack a Republican on.
WTF are you talking about? Its not an either or in some of these situations. You're telling me that Dan can't do a thing unless these towns hit by the hurricane tell him they need help? I understand it helps with logistics, but Dan can certainly ask the Feds for resources.

Here's a hint....Texas asked for it before Harvey hit. Think Houston gave the governor the thumbs up before he could ask for help?

I have no doubt Houston will drop the ball. But everyone treats all of these events like its either completely one sides fault or its the others. More often than not its a combination

Can the H-town people explain Lina Hidalgo to the rest of us across the state?

She is a local judge, but gets treated as the Mayor? Or she is the Mayor and used to be a judge? I don't understand why she holds so much power.
A county judge is essentially the COO of the county that they serve.

Why is it that we have to explain this to fellow Texans every time we discuss Lina Hidalgo and/or county officials?

Yes, actually. A jurisdiction does have to ask for assistance. It's called a star request

The state can put their resources on alert and move what they have around in anticipation of assisting a county or city. But, there's a system and it would be greatly disrupted if the state just started acting without a request

Because bless their hearts, they still don't understand basic government.

In disaster the local county judge is the jurisdiction in charge for that county. They are supposed to request resources from the state.
