What monetary or property damages does someone suffer if they lose a kid that is too young to work? Yet they can still sue for it. Why? For the pain and suffering.

He stacked lies about them on top of the loss they were already forced to endure. And why'd he do it? To make money.

So.... Those families deserve a billion dollars from this guy?

He wrongly claimed an event was fake and that somehow caused a billion in pain and suffering?

Absurd

Terrible take. This isn't a left vs right issue. This is a right vs wrong issue. Dare I say, a good vs evil issue. And Alex Jones is NOT the good guy, here.

Just because you might agree with a guy on some stuff doesn't make that person right everywhere else or even good. Some people just do crappy things to others and thankfully they sometimes have to account for it.
Now do everyone else in media. Did the people who pushed the Russian collusion ever have to account? Or the other countless lies that were told and have never been retracted. What about all the COVID lies?

It is a right vs left issue. They made it that way because they only ones held accountable are the ones the left don't like.

The media gets protection under NYT v. Sullivan. This is why the reports always say things like "according to sources / unnamed sources / according to reports, etc." and include "alleged/allegedly" about a person's action. By doing this, they are protected from any kind of slander lawsuit. The exception is if they are told before the story runs that it is false and are shown proof it is false. If they run it anyway, then they can and have been sued.

As for Alex Jones, he directly accused them of being crisis actors, more than once, which would not be covered by NYT v. Sullivan.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

From a pure bankruptcy tactics standpoint, this seems like a bad move. The value in Alex Jones's media company is Alex Jones. By converting and liquidating, you can monetize whatever hard assets are around but you can't forcibly monetize Alex jones.

He'll probably move somewhere it's hard to extract money from people that owe you and carry on with a new enterprise. But now outside of the guideposts of a bankruptcy court and/or a chapter 11 plan.

Exactly, why should any families get his personal money? Did he shoot their kids?

No but he called them all liars and their kids actors and accused them of perpetuating a hoax. And then his lunatic followers started harassing them to the point where some families had to move MULTIPLE TIMES.

So in addition to the horrific trauma they faced, they weren't even able to properly process their grief and faced even more trauma from Alex jones and his listeners.

There are absolutely very real damages here. Justice was served. Alex is no victim and he can rot in hell.
oh no
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I can see why people would hate Alex Jones for the things he said. I get that part, easily.

Claiming on a podcast years later after the massacre that one of the victim's dad looked weird and creepy and looked like a "crisis actor" sounds really bad. However, justifying a BILLION DOLLAR judgement? That's ludicrous. Demand an apology from the crazy podcaster and move on weather he issues one or not. You know if the person saying crazy things was (d)ifferent, attacking someone acceptable to attack like catholics or prolifers, or someone with a red cap on their head, there would be no case, no judgement, and certainly not a BILLION DOLLARS.

People are claiming dead Palestinians you see on tiktok and X all the time are crisis actors. Every day. Is everyone suggesting that getting fined a BILLION DOLLARS?

I'm no fan of Alex Jones but you have no clue what slander is
1. : the utterance of false charges or misrepresentations which defame and damage another's reputation. 2. : a false and defamatory oral statement about a person.

This is the definition and seems to fit this scenario. What did I get wrong?

Over whose line exactly ? Who makes that decision

A jury.

A jury also found oj not guilty

This is dumb. Ok so just because one jury in the 90s got a verdict wrong that's a reason to think this verdict was also wrong? What weird logic.

What specifically did they get wrong in this case? Or are you just making the general point "juries bad" because of the OJ case?

Rachel Maddow specifically targeted a public official by lying, and this public official was popular with many who supported him. She also conspired to deny people the privilege of voting for him to represent them.

You see how this crap can be twisted, right?

There was no verdict to decide. That was taken care of when the default judgment was entered against Alex Jones. All they jury was tasked with was how much compensation the families should receive.
