surprise a ton of American's, especially those thinking they're saving the planet.

Hate is how progressives sustain themselves. Without hate, introspection begins to slip into the progressive's consciousness, threatening the progressive with the truth: that their ideas and opinions are illogical, hypocritical, dangerous, and asinine.
This is backed by data.

Yeah, it's kind of the same thing as this...

i assume 99% of my recycling ends up either in a landfill or some river in the third world, so i focus mostly on limiting waste rather than fuss about sorting recyclables

Everyone on F16 should get on their HOA Board and eliminate the budgetary dollars reserved for Recycling.

I had a representative of a waste mgmt. company come out and share how the process works. Everyone was shocked and some denied acceptance at what the fella said, "It all goes to the same place".

I don't recycle. A complete waste of time and resources, both for me and the people involved in the process.

How much more energy/resources are used in the recycling process than if people were just good stewards who consumed more carefully?

The whole process is terribly inefficient.

This is one of my main reasons for wanting municipalities to use commercial incinerators to dispose of solid waste, rather than just burying it in a landfill.

If recycling plastics, paper products, etc... was a profit center for municipalities they would get sold for recycling. if it's a money loser, they are going to minimize cost and most likely get sent to a landfill.

Aluminum, glass (as examples) are more economically sensible/practical to recycle - and I would speculate are far more common to continue to get recycled because.....$$$$$$.

No doubt. And I DO take scrap to the scrap yard.

Might have been me.

Yeah, people have NO idea that this is true. And waste companies will charge exorbitant fees if you don't follow their recycling rules, all the while both trash and recycle go to the same dump.

The only difference are the cardboard only dumpsters. That's what we have at the properties we maintain now. Most dumps have a separate place for that.

I recycle steel because it's worth the $$$ for me to store it until I get a load for the recycle place and I can get paid

No other reason to recycle

The amount of plastic he used to track all this wipes out his recycling for a long time. congrats.

N
Nope.

It's cheaper to get new ore smelted into usable aluminum and glass is cheaper to get made new.

Most people don't follow the "rules" that recycling truly needs. The bottles, both glass and plastic, need cleaned and dried. No plastic wrap or bags of any kind, as they **** up the machinery. No food remnants on anything. Etc.

It's a lot of work.

I tried to tell my GF this but she's militant about recycling. I can see doing metal and maybe cardboard, but doing those little plastic bottles is a waste of time.

Same. Here in Sarasota I've seen the trash guys pick up the recycling bins and throw them in with the regular trash. Not even trying to hide it. So I told my wife-we're getting rid of the recycling bin (which was taking up a lot of space in my garage)

While I believe that somewhere between zero and a lot of stuff in the bins gets recycled, this guy's "experiment" is ruhtarded. That GPS tracker is going to get filtered out of any real facility and sent to the dump.

The days of recycling going to a facility, and having people sort through it, are gone. Like everyone else, they've cut costs...the sorters...and now it will literally go from you, to the truck, to the dump. No "facility". A lot of states don't even recycle glass at all. Not even faking it.

China was never recycling most plastics anyway. They normally just dumped them in the Ocean

In Austin, my company has to submit a 'recycling plan' annually, in accordance with the city's Universal Recycling Ordinance. We have to detail where all the recycle bins are, and are required to have as much recycling access as waste (or a required percentage...I cant recall).

This means we have to have to double our waste costs, because we're now required to have a separate recycle bin outside our facility, no more than 25 feet away from the waste bin.

We also have to document the percentage of recycled material versus waste material.

violating this results in $2,000 per day, per offense.

So, the city is taking in revenue via a tax/fines. The Waste Management companies doubled their revenue when the mandate occurred (double the number of required bins/services)...and none of the material is actually getting recycled.

This is just like taking all the trash from my street, and dumping 2 streets over...and patting ourselves on the back for cleaning up our environment.

I read several years ago a lot of places stopped recycling glass. Too expensive. Done right (doesn't happen either) they could break even if not turn a tiny profit on plastics, paper, etc. The processing required for glass made it cost prohibitive.

Staff - take out the trash.

It is a lot of work... and I say **** that.

I toss into the 55 garbage bag on the deck all the plastic bottles (detergent, dish soap, beverage, etc.) only because I don't like them taking so much space in my regular kitchen garbage receptacle.

But washing and rinsing? Seperating potato peelings from the chip bags... **** that noise. Let someone at the other end do the cleaning and seperating. I'm a job creator.

There's economic benefit to recycling metals. The energy savings is there

My understanding in practice is EPA regulation all but prevents operation of plastics recycling facilities in the US. That's why it all went to China.

There's is ZERO energy savings on glass recycling.

Reuse needs to increase and limit disposability. And I'm not taking about paper straws or wooden flatware (looking at you here Canada)
