"I Love Everybody"

"I'm not a good enough person or a good enough Christian to judge and criticize other people,"

"Judging [others] is just as bad as any other sin."

Incredible how anyone could possibly be offended by this woman and her loving attitude.

[This is an article in the Federalist. Not to mention, this forum is for the discussion of politics, news of the day, world issues. It's in the subtitle of the forum. This can include the overlap of politics and culture as you have here in this article. It's political.

Quote:

Pressed to condemn former President Trump recently, she refused, saying, "I have a lot of fans out there, and I don't want to offend anybody."

Parton often defaults to humility as her reason for staying out of politics and partisanship.

And smart. If you're making a living as an entertainer, maybe don't piss off half the country. Looking at you, Natalie Maines (then scrubbing my eyes with bleach).

What in that article makes you think the author is "offended"?

Dolly Parton for the most part personifies what most would hope for in an entertainer in that she sticks to her entertaining and otherwise tries to keep from making comments that blatantly split people down the middle.

The author is just pointing out the truth that invoking Christ to tell people to just "be who they are" is completely contrary to everything Christ taught, so leave Him out of it. Would be better if she just smiled and said she doesn't want to comment on anything that would rock the boat with her fans.

Dolly is great.

But, her sentiment mostly certainly doesn't lineup with what Christ taught.

Christianity, along with nearly every other religion, is by its nature, discriminatory.

Dolly is a treasure and it's obvious that she's just trying to stay out of controversy. She is promoting civility and decency, and it is pretty unfair coming at her with this line of criticism.

The fact is, she does judge, everyone judges. It's a natural part of human behavior. She just chooses to not make a public spectacle about it in deference to civility.

There is nothing inherently wrong with judging people and things. In fact, it is necessary for survival. However, like most things, it can become a prideful issue if not self-moderated and not done thoughtfully. Most of the time, I find people who say "you shouldn't judge people" are really saying "stop calling me out for my weaknesses and deficiencies". It's a part of the cultural campaign to force acceptance of bad behavior, deviancy, indecency, etc.

I look at this quote and I interpret it as Dolly saying she is insufficiently devout to be calling out others on their sinfulness. While it may not be the correct stance as a Christian, it does reflect humility and perhaps an admission that she is lacking confidence in her own understanding and adherence to the faith to be openly calling people out. Humility is a very valuable commodity, and you don't see it often in highly exposed public figures.

Dolly is a great business women! Everybody is a potential customer. Why alienate anyone from buying your products.

I have also noticed, in my own demeanor, when I hate someone or some group, it hurts me some. It's probably a very happy way to go through life trying to love everyone. I hope to be able to do that one day. But I doubt I will ever be foolish enough to walk through the most dangerous part of town at midnight or take a trip to Iran dressed like the pope.

Dolly is one of the few icons that understands their personal opinion doesn't carry more 'weight' because of their celebrity status. Therefore, she's not going to specifically call people out. They try and bait her into bashing Trump but she refuses.

Imagine the pressure (of someone with her platform that can work with ANYONE in the entertainment world) to go along with the crowd and constantly bash Trump or be ashamed of country music/Christianity/America/working-class culture. Most of the stars with her long career have eroded into virtue signalers that appease the country club celebrity culture they became part of. Not Dolly. She does her own thing, with a smile, and happily partners with artists from every background. And because she's so kind, even the left-leaning artists/celebrities have to embrace her.

How many living legends like her would be willing to put their name and image on a song about Jesus? She's one of the few. I don't think she lacks a mature faith. I think she's navigating complicated waters and using her platform for good while continually pointing back to her faith - even if being a Christian isn't popular among the entertainment culture she constantly works with. There will never be another like her.

This. Exactly. Big time.

Reminds me of the late, great Elvis Presley. In the late 60's/early 70's, in an interview, Elvis was asked by a reporter that, if given the fact that he chose to serve in the US Army when he was drafted rather than try to get out of his commitment (which probably could have been pulled off by pulling the right strings), What did he think of the people who were dodging the draft to avoid Vietnam?

Elvis basically said: 'I am just an entertainer and I choose to just entertain people with my music and leave that to others'.

Genius answer. Just entertain people. Elvis wasn't a politician and nothing would be gained by taking a for or against stance on the issue. He would only hurt himself by answering and his answer wouldn't have changed a single person's opinion on the issue.

I wish today's athletes and entertainers would realize and grasp this very simple concept,no matter how you feel. Nobody buys your records or attends concerts or athletic events because of your political stances.

This article reads like it was written by a high school sophomore looking to ruffle some feathers, and doing it in a very poor way. If there's anyone that could be elevated to sainthood, Dolly Parton is it.

Na, she lost me when she went all woke and BLM.

Quote:

She also provided details on why she renamed a Civil War-themed dinner attraction in her theme park in Tennessee and Missouri. In 2018, she changed the name of the Dixie Stampede to The Stampede after she became aware that the term "Dixie" is associated with the Confederacy.

"There's such a thing as innocent ignorance, and so many of us are guilty of that," she told the magazine.

"When they said 'Dixie' was an offensive word, I thought, 'Well, I don't want to offend anybody. This is a business. We'll just call it The Stampede.' As soon as you realize that [something] is a problem, you should fix it. Don't be a dumba**. That's where my heart is. I would never dream of hurting anybody on purpose."

It's amazing that you let one business decision keep you from supporting a woman who does a lot of good in the world. Especially when that one thing is renaming of a restaurant.

The author of the piece regrets using Dolly to make her point.

Quote:

"I regret using Dolly as the example for the point I was making in the article," she said. "As I wrote in the piece, I love her and think she does some incredible things for the world. We all make poor choices in how to frame things sometimes. This was one of those moments for me! Dolly is one of the few people who is beloved by all and who loves all. The world is lucky to have her."

Good on the author. Why can't more writers admit when they messed up?
