He suffered from alcoholism, depression and anxiety. I think he may have killed himself

He was playing Friday and withdrew himself from the tournament somewhere on the back nine for not feeling well. Not sure suicide is what happened.

Damn. It's almost like depression and anxiety can keep you from performing tasks normally

30 years old?! Very sad.

Agreed. How terrible the depression/addiction must have been that would cause one to withdraw in the middle of a golf game and off himself hours later?

How about we don't waste time arguing about our own ideas and just realize how tragic this is. An incredible job, 2-time winner with his life ahead of him, struck down by his own demons.

I have a good friend who lost one brother to suicide and said that typically people battling severe depression don't do this at their bottom, but when they are back to the top yet starting to feel themselves slide downwards and just don't want to go through it another time.

These are not alcoholics, they are severely depressed people who will do anything to get rid of their incredible pain.

Prayers for his family and friends, it's just so sad.

I get that but the way it was presented yesterday, it was presented as illness on the tv coverage of the tournament.

Depression and anxiety are both forms of illness. They don't need to elaborate anything for us

If that's the reason he cited to the tour for withdrawing though, I don't see how the broadcast crew could present it in any other way.

Interesting that his parents didn't reference his fiance in the statement.

It's great we can talk about mental illness and suicide but so much more needs to be done to address this. One of my aunts died when I was little and my parents just said "Aunt Diane passed away". My uncle's life never recovered and in high school his kids lived with us for awhile until they could live back with their dad. Nobody ever talked about it and I knew deep down she had killed herself and nobody had to tell me. Why it was such a taboo topic still pisses me off, such a dysfunctional way to address it.

I guess it's unimaginably traumatic to those close to the victim. My grandfather on my mother's side had an alcohol and gambling problem in the mid 50's. He decided to take his own life. The family told us lies about him when we were young children until we quit asking.

Later on, the family undertook a big relocation when I was a young teenager. It was a big deal for the family. My mom broke down and told my sister the story, who eventually relayed it to me and our brother.

My mom is 86 today, and still hasn't talked to me about it

Thought the same.
That struck a nerve with me.
Thought and prayers to his family.
It is a terrible loss no matter the reason.

I see that this thread has had a major cleanup. Thank you to staff (if you wish to delete this part, i understand).

Sincere T&P for his family and loved ones that are left behind.

It's easy to keyboard warrior and say that no good ever comes from someone taking their own life, but when it happens to someone in high profile if it can serve to enhance public awareness of others mental anguish then perhaps some good can come of it. Watch your friends and loved ones. The clues often will be there, but they're going to be subtle. Don't see it in hindsight!

I think in the long run, kids are probably better off not knowing specific details. I know it is tough to find out or figure stuff out later and realize you've either been lied to or kept in the dark, but there ARE good reasons for not telling. A good friend of mine took his own life last year. Talk about out of the blue. If you had asked me to rank the people I know who might have done such a thing in the order of most likely to least likely, he not only would have been in the latter category, but one of the last people mentioned. He was a strong Christian, leader in his church, and had even written a devotional book based, essentially, on living life after dealing with tough issues.

The one thing I didn't know was that his father had taken his own life. I think when you have a parent or loved one, even a grandparent, who did this, at a very low point, you might rationalize that since it made sense to them, it must make sense, period. I don't know for sure as I can't comprehend that thinking. I'm not sure there was "thinking" as I believe some form of illness, whether stress induced or not, took over. At any rate, he decided, I believe, that taking his own life "made sense."

Would this be prevented if someone doesn't know that a grandfather or uncle (or whatever) did that? I don't know for sure, but unless you can tell me what is to gain by them knowing, especially at a young age, I'll stick with my experience here and say leave them out of the loop on this.

I've known some really bizarre situations like that where suicide happened. It makes no sense, but bad depression can drive irrational behavior.

3 consecutive bogies, then withdrew with 2 holes remaining never to play again

Sad as hell

Oh trust me I am keenly aware. I've said that same thing numerous times on here. It will creep in to the real world though.
