I was staying at the Mirage on multiple trips to Vegas in the late 90s. Our hosts had the reserved cabanas at the pool and excellent seats at all of the shows. Sad to see it go. (Hence the frown emoticon.) But what is going to replace it will be eyesore.

The Mirage hotel is closing in July, ending a 34-year run as a landmark on the Las Vegas Strip.
Hard Rock International said the hotel, which it bought in 2022, will close July 17, according to ABC.
The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and Guitar Hotel Las Vegas will take the place of The Mirage.

"The property will be reimagined and developed into a new integrated resort featuring a nearly 700 ft. guitar-shaped hotel prominently in the center of the famous Las Vegas Strip," the company said, noting that the new hotel is scheduled for opening in 2027

Why is this politics related? The union workers out of jobs in an election year.

Quote:

The closing will cost more than 3,000 people their jobs, according to the Associated Press.

The Culinary and Bartenders Union accounts for about 1,700 workers, the Los Angeles Times reported. Union members will have a choice between taking a severance package of $2,000 for every year of service plus six months of pension and health benefits or a lower payout that preserves seniority rights for new jobs in the new hotel.
Quote:

"Culinary Union members at The Mirage have a strong union contract, ensuring that workers are protected, even as the property closes its doors entirely for three years from July 2024 May 2027," said Ted Pappageorge, Culinary Union secretary-treasurer.

The new hotel expects to hire almost 7,000 people.

Resort President Joe Lupo told the staff Wednesday about the closing, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Quote:

"We really are encouraged about not only the future of Las Vegas, but how Hard Rock and Seminole Tribe can play a role in helping to develop that and grow the market," Lupo said. The Seminole Tribe owns Hard Rock International.

"But today is a tough day for a lot of people. Our priority is the well-being of those individuals," he said.

Not exactly but the cabana boys who waited on us hand and foot with food and drinks were easy on the eyes.

That's what I think. Don't like that all and I can only imagine how it will be lit up at night.

They're stringing those union people along. Stop picking on them. This is just a riff in an election year. Strikes a bad chord.
Trump will fix it.

My understanding about how the culinary union is quite organized in their GOTV for Dems in Vegas. Provide buses for their members to vote, etc. Although the stated number of union members at the Mirage is 1,700 with a total employee count of 3,000 who will be out of a job? Months before an election?

My first trip to Vegas had us in the Tropicana. It's gone now, too.

It wasn't bad, but it was very outdated.

I had to make my own refrigerator in the room.

The Strat was a s-hole, but at least modern.

Westgate was my favorite room, but all of our events happen there so it's tough to get in at the right time.

Vegas has pretty much gone to sh** across the board since 2020. Pot smoke everywhere and fat women wearing next to nothing. It's just gross.

20 years ago you'd walk in The Venetian or The Bellagio and see Playmate level lovely women serving drinks. Now it's skanks, vape, pot, homeless, crazies, and fatties everywhere.

Like I said my trips to Vegas were in the 90s and haven't been back since then. So I have very fond memories of the Mirage. It helped being a guest of a high roller guy from Chicago, so nice suites and a lot of perks. Not the Joe Blow from the Bronx level of experience. Guy was in the closeout business and had two shows a year in Vegas. My girlfriend was also in the closeout business and he was a big client. So we would go to assist with the show, setting it up, taking sales orders, making sure the buyers had plates of food and drinks, etc.

My girlfriend was a very petite blonde and I was a tall blonde with long legs. She was making money and I was there just for the fun. Met a lot of people, sports stars, celebrities, Hollywood producers, etc. Had great seats to whichever show we wanted.

ETA - wife and I went to a show at the Mirage on an anniversary trip this past October 6th and it wasn't any better/worse than most of the other casinos we visited. Woke up to the news of the barbaric hamas attack the next morning.

The Mirage is not being demolished. They're going to leave the existing hotel and put the guitar in front of the existing building. I'll miss the water/volcano out front, I always liked that. The new guitar hotel is going to be right along the sidewalk. I have a hard time visualizing it, but the mockups I've seen look great.

That's even worse then, if that is true. W dumbhy are all of the employees being dumped then? Construction of the guitar will block any entrance to the hotel for three years?

That's dumb. And means the backside rooms will have a very bad view of just another wall. Ditto for the once highly prized rooms looking out to the Strip.

The Seminole tribe is doing a great job taking full advantage of this country's white guilt (see tax advantage) and I give them full props.
