A&M Galveston's only outlet. Along with quite a few other industrial sites.

The only good news is that it looks like the railroad bridge took the main hit and only damaged the actual road bridge in a few places. This bridge is old and there have been plans being made for a new bridge for a few years now so maybe they will get their wish.

Overall doesn't look too bad and whatever is leaking needs to be handled quickly to reduce spread.

That barge is waaaaaay off where the drawbridge area of the bridge is located.

ETA: At least 750 feet.

Look at that crystal bluewater! A view any global traveler would want to visit. All those leaking chemicals will kill the bacteria living in that water.

That portion of the railroad bridge has been out for at least 20 years it looks like.

You can see the rail sticking out as it sits on top of the barge with concrete as well.

I imagine the pucker factor on the barge and/or on any tug was pretty intense!

Is Galveston water ugly AF because of the muddy Brazos and Mississippi rivers?

I always wondered why it was so ugly

And the trinity river. Dumps a ton of silt out into the gulf

The San Jacinto and the Trinity are the rivers that flow directly into Galveston Bay, which is what you're looking at here.

But basically yes. The water is brown due to silt from rivers.

And in case some of you are living under a rock the recent floods have rivers and creeks swollen and have caused a ton of freshwater and silt to be dumped into the bay so yes it's extra muddy.

All that fresh water has been hell on my work, which coincidentally is impacted by this allision. I was lucky enough to not be stuck anywhere because of this for now. Can't say the same for my coworkers who I just heard are getting pretty screwed.

Oh and ICW is closed and I would imagine the rest of galveston channel will be closed in short order.

Anyone know if the bridge is wide enough in general to accommodate a barge of that size? It always seemed pretty narrow when I was at school there.

Oh and IRT DEI stuff, that is almost certainly not the issue. Inland waterways are not generally affected by this simply because there is a barrier to entry in the credentialing and most minority types have no interest in a life on the water.

I believe the span is 35 meters.

It has been out of service for a long time. The tracks aren't connected to anything, and a section of it was already removed years ago.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

But personally I dont really recall seeing barges like that going through there, but that isn't saying they don't, it would just be unusual, from all my time being near that bridge.

Except for a certain group that likes to swim...according to the NYC mayor. They surely must be interested in a life in the water.

I am curious on why the barge was there, doesn't look even close that it could fit under that bridge

Smaller push boats and other industry uses it but they don't use that to get to the ICW.

I'm fairly certain this is another engineering casualty.

Reported that it was "under toe and came loose".

Also, google map satellite view shows sections of the RR bridge in that area missing.

Theres also a section of the RR sitting on top of the barge.
