Quote:

A longstanding emissions reduction program may lead to a 50-cent increase in gasoline prices within two years in California, according to a little-known state air quality regulator report.

In September, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the state's primary environmental regulator, reported gas prices will rise next year by about 50 cents a gallon and every year thereafter to aid in clean air efforts. The price increase does not include the existing gas tax in the state.

Republican state Sen. Janet Nguyen, one of the legislature's most critical tax hawks, told Fox News Digital the "secret" tax increase "would penalize the majority of Californians."
Another fine example of YGWYVF (you get what you vote for).
Trump will fix it.

Why anybody would want to live in that left wing craphole and put up with the constant barrage of nonsense like this is beyond me.

But the dummys will comply and then be the first ones complaining about high gas prices and massive profits for the O&G industry. They certainly work hard to earn the label of useful idiots.

Both the gas tax and EV tax should be higher in every state now. Infrastructure is more and more expensive compared to the last time it was increased but it's political poison to do so.

They'll increase it 50 cents every year... clearly they're deliberately trying to make gasoline prohibitively expensive and not use extra tax revenue for any valid purpose

Heard people say that once the middle class has pretty much left CA it will only be rich people who can afford to live there and the peasant class that takes care of them.

Does no one else wonder how the peasant class is going to get by?

If I were a rich Californian I would be concerned that one day the peasants are going to eat them.

Elections are when people find out what politicians stand for, and politicians find out what people will fall for.

The rich will easily absorb it. The poor take the bus. So once again, this hurts the middle class and will further the wealth gap.

If the gas tax and EV tax actually went to infrastructure, that would be one thing, but its just another endless pot of money spent by politicians with no budget.

Shoefly!

I say Big Sur is the most expensive gas, perhaps in the nation minus Hawaii.

Without looking it up first, I'm guessing $9.50/gal.

Also, there are a crap ton more vehicles on the road now than back then

I'm curious as to what this "EV tax" is, because when you type that into the google machine, every single hit talks about the "EV tax credit", not an actual useage tax. Is it something that is billed into the charges at a charging station?

i have yet to see any benefit of the 100s of billions in stimulus we have provided for infrastructure. so why would anyone want to give more to an entity that steals 49 out of every 50 cents.

Gas Taxes and What You Need to Know
quote from the article
  • Unfortunately, the revenue raised from gas taxes has failed to keep up with rising infrastructure costs and inflation. The development of electric vehiclesand increased fuel efficiency of all autos have reduced gas demand relative to vehicle miles traveled, further widening the gap between the gas tax funds raised and road maintenance costs
  • As of July 2023, California had the highest gas tax in the nation at 68.1 cents per gallon. Following closely behind is Illinois, with a rate of 66.5 cents per gallon
  • The bulk of revenue from gas taxes pays for infrastructure projects such as building, repairing, and modernizing roads and public transit. (my 2 cents added:The bulk is, but where did the not the bulk get spent on?)
  • Given the increasing shortfalls, federal and state officials will need to consider how to keep paying for paving the country's roadways and fixing its potholes. At the federal level alone, the cumulative funding shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund is expected to reach $241 billion by 2033.
Among the latter, under pretence of governing they have divided their nations into two classes, wolves and sheep.”

In Texas I think we charge EVs an extra $200/year. Try googling "EV registration fee."

$200 a year isn't nearly enough to offset the road usage that would be paid for through gas taxes.

At least you are finally being honest about wanting dear big gov to expand and be more powerful.

No, we do not need more big gov taxes until big gov can show they can be fiscally responsible. You can live amongst the Californians if you want more taxes.

Nope. If the govt cared about infrastructure, they'd cut other programs to make it happen. But at this point it's all just an endless funnel of money at the expense of the working American.

I've seen it over $8/gal next to Mono Lake in Lee Vining, CA on US395 between Mammoth Ski Resort and Carson City, NV.

Looks like it's only about $7 right now.

I was paying $1.99 a gallon for gas in 2020. Yesterday it was $3.89. I would say yes it has.

Don't forget that in California, you also pay "Cap at the Rack" and LCFS taxes. This year that's an incremental 37-40 cpg in addition to any state taxes. These also will continue to go up.

In Texas the gas tax is 20 cents/gallon. I put about 20 gallons/ week in my pickup. I drive 50 weeks out of the year, and thus contribute $200 to the state's highway fund. This $200/year fee on Teslas evens the playing field quite nicely, at least at the state level.

The people using the roads should pay for the roads.

They should not be funding both sides of a war overseas or for an illegal immigrant to get a sex change. The money should stay in the community and pay for someone to actually fix the road.

I live in Houston. For 8 years my trash and recycling was a crap shoot for when it would be picked up. If they came on the right day it could be 8:00 PM when the truck was driving around the neighborhood but was usually 3-4 days later. We have a new mayor and all of a sudden the trash is picked up on the correct day every time because the person that has the contract knows they will get fired if they don't perform and they have to spend the money fixing trucks and not on hookers and blow.
