I think we are in for much, much worse than "this".
The Soviet Union and Soviet Bloc are gone, there will be no implosion there. And who knows how big of a menace we face in China. There will probably not be the necessary cleansing red wave like Reagan had ever again. The percentage of "citizens" who culturally have no idea what it means to be an American is larger than can possibly be absorbed. If not, I would highly suggest it, great history podcast that is very entertaining. But his series called Death Throes of the Republic details the fall of the Roman Republic, pretty much the 200-250 years leading up to Caesar.

And damn, does it follow almost to the tee what is happening to America. He goes into so much great detail, but the one that applies to this subject directly is that the Republic instituted a law that any Tribune of the Plebs (think President/Speaker hybrid) would have diplomatic immunity while in office, but once his term was over could be sued to the highest order for any perceived wrongs done while in office.
It created a system that this happened so much, most Tribunes would either flee Rome after office or they would spend their entire terms gaining support from rich upperclassmen to protect them and bank roll them after office by doing them favors and passing/proposing laws benefiting them at the expense of the every day people.
That was just one small aspect of the corruption in government and you pair that with granting social programs to Roman citizens and then granting citizenship to more and more non-Romans diluting the allegiances and military, led to individuals being able to garner huge sums of wealth and personal armies that the 1st triumvirate was created. That is a very abridged and un-detailed version of events.
Mainly it's just fascinating to see the parallels.
