Calvin and Hobbes is, but of course, now "problematic"

So there is this guy named Lukas Shayo....who writes about comic books for a living and who has decided that the legendary (IMHO) comic strip Calvin and Hobbes has...well...just not aged well.

Quote:

Calvin and Hobbes is often considered a timeless comic strip. Any reader can still enjoy the strip the way Bill Watterson initially intended. The characters, setting, and circumstances always feel like something that could easily be replicated today.

There are some elements, however, that have not aged perfectly. After all, the strip ran from 1985 to 1995. Some of the relationships are too toxic for a modern setting, and some details simply have not added up for the modern age. In fact, some advances in science or changes in cultural perception have rendered some strips relatively incomprehensible.

Toxic! That sounds bad.

Quote:

Calvin's parents are often busy taking care of the house or working, leaving Calvin with few opportunities for emotional support. There are times when his parents step in like when Calvin failed to save the baby raccoon but he is more often left to work through problems himself. It is a lot of pressure for a little boy and would not be considered socially acceptable parenting today.

Five bucks says the author of this piece has been in therapy since he was 14.

Quote:

The fact that Calvin's parents have no GPS tracker on him, despite Calvin constantly roaming around the town, is unrealistic in the modern world.

Please tell that this is not true, youg'uns. For, if it is, we are doomed.

Quote:

At times, Calvin's parents elected to leave him with a young teenager named Rosalyn. Their relationship did improve over the course of Calvin's time with her, but Rosalyn's behavior was initially extremely inappropriate. In the modern world, Rosalyn would be severely criticized for her actions.

After all, Rosalyn regularly threatens Calvin for even the slightest offense. Staying up late or playing too loudly often led to threats of violence or a punishment of solitary confinement.

The horror......the horror.

Quote:

Bullying is a serious problem in modern schools, but no one does anything about it in Calvin and Hobbes. Calvin's bully, Moe, regularly threatens to beat him senseless, but no authority figure intervenes or cares. Calvin is often left to his own devices. Even his parents never comment on Moe's actions.

In the modern world, students would receive instant support in the face of bullying, especially if the bully is physically hurting them or stealing from them. Since Miss Wormwood never realized the issue or attempted to help him, Calvin was failed by his school. It would not be viewed in such a comedic way today.

On the bright side, Miss Wormwood didn't insist on Calvin participating in her/his/xer personal psychodramas based upon her possibly numerous and even contradictory genders and sexual preferences. So there is that.

Quote:

Today, parents are chastised for not encouraging their children to socially engage with other students from a young age. Calvin's parents, however, rarely encourage him to speak with other 6-year-olds. Calvin's dad often tries to convince him to go outside, but he generally has him wander alone.

At his age, Calvin should be building his social skills with other children, rather than his imaginary tiger. He should also be spending much more time with his parents. The poor parenting in Calvin and Hobbes has not aged well, given that developing child-rearing theories encourage socialization and parental involvement.

Remember when I bet five bucks that this author has been in therapy since age 14? I'm changing this to age 9.

Quote:

Most notably, Calvin is generally extremely sexist.

Oh, FFS.

NOOOOOO!!!

It's not bad enough that they have to ruin current society, but now they want to attack our childhoods too! Wonder how long the list would be of "acceptable" media based on today's standards. Such a crock...

For the love of God, don't let that blithering idiot find out that kids from my generation spent sun-up to sun-down away from the house, without parents knowing exactly where we were at all times, just out with friends having a good time doing things we did in those days. Or movies like Blazing Saddles. Or jokes that we told in those days. Or that we routinely drank water out of a hose in the back yard. Or that we would "jump" our bikes Evel Knievel style over hills or ditches.

I hate those "... this that haven't aged well" click bait posts.

Of course there's going to be one person out of hundreds of millions of people in this country that doesn't like something from before they were born.

In thirty years there's going to be people who think what's popular today, "didn't age well."

The problem with the internet is that the village idiots can be heard.

The part about having to work through things on his own just flat out pissed me off.

Having to work through difficulty on your own is what builds character and develops you as a human being. Good hell, this generation is so damn soft.

LOL. Someone actually took the time to write that drivel and thought it was smart.

I guess the author didn't give Calvin credit for being ahead his time for identifying as something he's not, huh?

Case in point:

There's a subset of millenial parents fighting against culture and economics to get their kids a patch of woods to explore rather than screens - and it heavily overlaps with those who are homeschooling. The outdoor Calvin experience of exploration and imagination and autonomy in an idyllic safe neighborhood… without the negatives of government factory style schooling… is the goal.

Thanks for the laugh about what some coastal dweeb got his panties wadded up about!

We typically made jumps to jump over each other. Lots of fights over who would be the fifth kid in the line up (since I was small it was usually me)

Well, actually, that's what we have now.

I contend it is the modern setting that is actually too toxic.

If only we could be as free from modern toxicity as Calvin.

Oh whatever, that guy needs to go **** himself.

People are getting weaker by the day.

These are the same people that find Seinfeld and Friends offensive.

The problem isn't what was out then it's the problem with now. Too much coddling, too much panic, all these teenagers in therapy now it's weird. I'm not saying some people don't need that kind of thing of course some do, but not at the levels we have now. They just cannot handle any kind of adversity in their life. Everything is a stressor. Everything is unfair. Everybody is a victim. Enough already.

And people like this nut have to criticize everything and read way too much into it. Calvin and Hobbs was a great comic strip and it is today. One of my favorite was also Bloom County. Just an awesome cartoon. I still have books of both these comics.

Ted Koppel is a waffle.

Someone should email him that a talking tiger Hobbes must be an enlightened trans-species doula which was attempting to help guide Calvin down the left leaning path. Oh and he's gay. Might keep him busy writing more trash to give whoever finds this clickbait crap something else to laugh about.

Or not. We've already got several collections of the original work and this clown can't come & take it from us. Go to any used bookstore and you can have the same.

The snowmen were awesome! Coming from south Texas I was extremely jealous of people that had snow. Now not so much. That stuff is a pain in the ass.

I have the complete collection of books. My wife gave them to me for my birthday shortly after we got married. My kids have read all of them, it was better than the kids books out at the time.
