If you know Mark Lutchman, he's a conservative black who knows how to grab the spotlight. Recently he tweeted out that only 1.6% of Americans owned slaves, "so you can stop basing your hate for the entire white race for the actions of a mere 1.6%."

False! Snopes claims (via MSN). In fact the real percentage was …

1.4%

So libs can rest easy tonight knowing the fact checkers at Snopes have put to bed another vicious conservative twisting of the truth.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/it-s-claimed-that-only-1-6-of-us-citizens-owned-slaves-in-1860-we-ran-the-numbers/ar-BB1l1qVm

Can't be true. I have it in good authority that every white person owned a slave that they personally caught in Africa.

If you read the article, Snopes did this to lecture everyone on how it doesn't let whitey off the hook just because only 1.4% of whites owned slaves.

Oh yah they had a nice liberal slant on it. But they missed the forest on account of the trees.

I've read that 95% of the current American population, all colors, all races, descend from people who immigrated AFTER the civil war.

...and 100% of the current American population did not own slaves before the Civil War.

My family moved to Georgia in the late 1700s. My grandfather had an old safe with some old "artifacts" there.

My [i don't know how many Greats to put] Grandfather fought in a Confederate Unit. My [? Greats] Grandmother sewed the battle flag for the Emanuel County Calvary Rough and Ready Guard which is also still in the safe. When Sherman came through she stood on top of the hay bales so he wouldn't burn them. There would be nothing to feed the livestock in the winter and they'd starve.

I guess it's possible if you include ANY ancestors are post Civil War. All the branches of my family tree go pre Civil War (just about all are pre Revolutionary War) except for one set of great great grandparents from Germany who settled near Fredericksburg in 1872. I would have thought most African Americans would be 100% pre Civil War ancestors, though.

Take anything from Snopes with a grain of salt. A large grain of salt.

Snopes grew out of the old alt.folklore.urban newsgroup. The Mikkelson's proclaimed themselves to be the sole determinent of truth and wrote the faq for the group. Snopes grew out of that.

One example of their idiocy was their proclaimed that no small planes were being manufactured in the United States because of legal liabilities. They were blatantly wrong and it took months to get them to admit their stupid mistake.

They also refused to believe the Zsha Zsha Gabor incident on the Tonight Show ("Do you want to pet my *****?" "Sure. Move the damn cat.") and proclaimed that the only way to convince them that it happened was to show a copy of the show. At the time that happened, of course, people didn't have video recorders to and the network wasn't sharing their tapes. There were news articles, but they didn't say explicitly what happened.

Snopes definitely has its biases.

Actually, I think the argument is that white people benefit from being white and therefore getting preferred status over the black people. But all one has to do is look at the socioeconomic status of white people in Appalachia (and Lubbock) to see that argument is completely bogus as well.

Figures lie and liars figure. By math, the numbers are correct. 395k out of 27000000 free people nets 1.4%. Snopes also said % of families that owned slaves. Didn't state it as a % of population.

Population in the southern states plus Maryland around 1860 was 8 million free citizens.

So, as a whole, 395000/8000000 = 5% of the southern population.

You can't tell me 50% of families owned slaves in MS but 5% of the population on average owned slaves. Ain't adding up here.

My family moved from Germany to Goliad in 1846. Back then German farmers did not use slaves as labor, rather the labor came from the family members. This is how it was for generations. My grandfather quit school in the 6th grade to work full time on the farm as he was the oldest and this is what was expected. No one in our family ever owned slaves, and there is no knowledge of other German families in the area that owned slaves.

Also my family did not get involved in the Civil War. That was not of any interest to them, they had a farm to keep and a family to feed. I am sure this is the case for many others that have family in Texas of German or Czech decent.

Also read 'Black Rednecks and White Liberals' by Thomas Sowell. Explains in great detail about the history of slavery in the south and it's origins. Many of the slave owners from the southern British Isles. These Brits were known to be lazy with bad manners. Which makes sense when they bought slaves to do their work for them. Contrasting to the German farmers with superior work ethic and more efficient farming techniques that were much more unlikely to own slaves.
