HOUSTON The largest urban solar farm in the nation is just weeks away from breaking ground in Houston's sunnyside neighborhood.

Nestled between State Highway 288 and Sunnyside Park is a 240-acre plot of land just waiting for something new.

But to understand just how valuable the future of this land is to Sunnyside, we need to talk about its dark and storied past.

The property between Reed Road and W Bellfort Avenue is now overgrown with trees.

Turn the clock back 50 years ago and there was a push to close down a landfill here, a dark mark on the Sunnyside community.

"You know, there are, traditionally dumps in black communities," said Houston City Councilwoman.

How long before the copper is stolen and the solar panels littered with bullet holes.

We saw first hand what one good hailstorm does to these. One good hurricane will do the trick too

Hope that area is immune from hail.

Will a hurricane not destroy most other things?

Again - will that not also destroy plenty of other things? And solar panels today are much tougher than they were years ago. Most can withstand more hail than your asphalt roof. I don't think solar is the answer to all society's woes but we gotta quit spouting theories as though they are facts. That's what libs do. See "wind and solar and EVs is a solution to climate change."

I'd like to see more of these in minority neighborhoods since they're the ones disproportionately affected by climate change.

Pictures from a Scotsbluff solar farm that was hit by 150 mph winds driving baseball sized hail. That would definitely destroy your roof, too. Thanks for making my point - that if it destroys the panel, it destroys a roof and that people will just believe and parrot anything that fits their preferred narrative without confirming facts.

Ah yes, because the resilience of our electric generating capacity should be judged by the resilience of an asphalt shingle roof.

They can't do anything else with the property it is so toxic. This is a win win.

Sunnyside has always been sketchy AF. Last summer my wife sent me on a mission to pick up patio furniture from a facebook seller. "It's near Meyerland" she said. Coming in from Cypress, I made the mistake of waiting until i got on 610 from 290 to pull up directions and see that I was actually going to the heart of Sunnyside, so I was already pot commited. After loading up the back of my truck, I stopped on the side of the street real quick to pull up directions on my phone and some mexican tweaker with face tats ran out to my truck and asked me what I was doing in front of his house. Just explained myself and got the hell out of there. Lesson learned.

I didn't say that. I made the point that wind and solar isn't the answer and also the point that it's a weird thing to say it will never be useful because there could be hail. Hail and hurricanes impact a roof the same way as a solar panel. By that logic, any roof that can't stand up to that should never be used.

But go ahead and keep getting worked up over something using logic that is so easily called out as faulty. Makes us all look real smart.

If there is a place to put one, on top of an old landfill sure seems to be a prime candidate.
