I am at JFK leaving NYC. It is much dirtier than when I visited in 2021 but that was still Covid time. There is lots of marijuana smoking in the street. May have seen the last two broadway shows in NYC that I will attend. They are also trying to add a $15 tax for outside drivers to enter Manhattan. Traffic was awful compared to my last two visits.

Oh thats cool. I remember posting about it then too. Always a bit of a connect for me to anything there.

I visited probably 20+ times in the 8 years since she started. Move in and move out every year in the dorms and her apartment too in college. And we would visit once a school year at least usually my wife and I went seperate to maximize the number of visits for her and we would do different things.

Probably saw 12 or more broadway shows in that time as well.

Had some really cool experiences and some not so great ones but always good to see my daughter.

Here are the 4 most bizarre and/or unique visits - my own trip down memory lane:

October 2016 - Fall of her freshman year we decided to do the standby line for Saturday Night Live studio audience. That meant sleeping out on the street (literally) by Rockefeller Center. The line would form on Friday evening around 6pm. We were probably 20-25 back from the front of the line. You had to stay all night and they monitored it so no crashers or anything. At like 8am they take your names and whether you want the live taping or the rehearsal taping. No guarantee you will make it in but anyway we went for the live taping. Given two passes numbered with our names on them and had to provide ID. Then they check it when you come back that evening. We had to be there around 9pm I think. Anyway we made it in, literally only one person behind us in the live show standby group got in after us. Back row of the upper level of the studio seating. It was so cool though. And this was the last show before the 2016 election - Benedict Cumberbatch host and Alec Baldwin did his Trump impression of course. And Bill Murray and several alums were there and made cameos and the WS winning Chicago Cubs were there too (thats why Bill Murray was there). So cool.

Spring 2017 - this was just funny to me. Wife and I visited together and had a day to kill. She says you want to go to the car show cuz she was wanting a new car. I was like meeeehhh but then I asked where it was and she said "The Javits Center" and I lit up like a Christmas Tree. She had no idea why but I was nearly jubilant. Only after we got there did I tell her I wanted to go to see the place where Hillary suffered her unfathomable defeat to Donald Trump. The place where she had planned her big celebration and fireworks show only to have to cancel all of it. That was fun. Oh and we saw some cars too. lol

August 2020 - this was just bizarre. NYU of course shut down in March of 2020 and sent everyone home. My daughter had been in Florida on spring bfreak but flew home directly to Dallas. She had only packed for Spring Break of course all the rest of her stuff was in NY. Which was now a ghost town. By August her lease was up in Stuytown and her and her roommates had to move out. She had gone up a few weeks before hoping things improved and to prep for moving. I flew in and that was surreal like 5 or 6 people on my flight including me. NY was on quarantine so I had to be in and out in less than 24 hours or had to stay isolated for 10 days (BS). So we packed up that night and the next morning we had a Uhaul rental and loaded up the stuff of all the girls and drove it to a storage unit in Harlem. Now this was crazy but the streets of Manhattan were empty. Driving a big uhaul was no problem. I was the only vehicle I saw moving most of the time, alone on 3-5 lane roads that were usually bumper to bumper. I drove 90+ blocks through Manhattan streets in like 15-20 minutes. We also dropped stuff at a upper west side apartment one of the girls was using a room in. Then returned the Uhaul back down around 20th and raced back to her apartment, checked out and caught a flight by 6pm out of LGA. Would have been impossible except the city was empty which was surreal and weird. Really sad actually.

May 2022 - so she had graduated 2 years earlier, remotely from home, and they had this terribly sad online graduation for them at the time which sucked. They still had no in person ceremony in 2021 so finally in 2022 they decided to have one with everyone from May 2020/Dec 2020/May 2021/Dec 2021/ and May 2022 at one huge all day event at Yankees Stadium in the Bronx. That was really cool and we flew in for it. They had separate ceremonies by graduating year and 2020 was in the evening. It was awesome. There were 35-40k there for the ceremony. Really awesome event and they finally got the graduation they deserved. she was with her two roommates who all started and graduated together. They are all still friends and all live in Manhattan still.

My daughter just moved there last year. She's enjoying it so far. (She has not been punched in the face.). I'm just glad she's back in the US. The New York Aggie club seemed pretty nice.

There a plenty of big law jobs in Houston and Dallas. Massive markets. Even Austin has a decent market. But NyC will be an awesome experience. Despite what everyone says about NYC on here it's still an amazing city and is a ton of fun to spend time there in your 20s/30s (or even later if you make enough).
