Good grief.

Very twisted conspiracy theory about the murder of Danny Casolaro.

It's worth a watch if you have 4 hours,……. Not sure I believe ALL of the tie ins, but many of them are interesting,

Biggest thing in the docu-series that I don't believe is the notion that the Regan camp paid the Iranian government NOT to release the hostages until Regan got elected. They called it an "October Suprise" That doesn't jive with other facts, Interesting tie ins tho,

Interested to know what others think.

I read a book a few years (maybe 1983?) about the law firms involved in the hostage negotiations for the release of the hostages.

There were a lot of moving parts and multiple banks involved including national banks that had to follow specific procedures and this was back before wire transctions were not over the internet. Any glitch anywhere caused hours and days of delay to confirm and reconfirm. Those law firms were working 24/7 to get the deal done well before Reagan had won the election much less taken office.

The same book walked through the law firms' detailed step by step by misstep by misstep during the Chrysler bailout.

Moral of those stories? Get too many lawyers involved and they muck things up to keep billing? Or lawyers are trained to disagree with each other? Combination of both?

In any event, it was not Reagan. It was the lawyers and bankers here and in European countries that dragged things out...and well no one respected Carter.

I worked for Inslaw 1990-1991 as a Regional Sales Manager. I left because I thought Bill and Nancy were going cray cray. Always having reporters et al in our offices...Spooked me so I left.

Now after watching this.....humm.....

I watched that documentary and wish I hadn't. It had no direction and the ending provided no conclusion to any of the loose ends that were left.

I watched this and The Program immediately afterward. Needless to say, I need a break from Netflix documentaries for a while. Both were terrible.

I think the only part of that doc that held water was that the Promis software they were selling to foreign countries did have a back door coded in allowing the American government to spy. All the rest were just random conspiracy theories loosely tied together by what seemed to be pathological liars needing attention and low level criminals. Even at the end when the documentarian got a call from the guy screaming "people are dying", he seemed to just want to roll his eyes.

Yeah, that PROMIS thing was weird. Also, the secret weapons facilities on the Indian reservation, was interesting. I could see the administration doing that for the Conras….. that part made sense. Tied in with the work they did with Barry Seal.

I find Edward Luttwak's version of why the hostages were released on inauguration day to be credible.

...But then came Reagan. I was in the transition team. It was a real transition team, not one of those pretend things we see nowadays where hundreds of people are writing position papers. There was a very small group of us, we always had the president with us, and we would go around the table from problem to problem.

Reagan was inaugurated without making any concessions whatsoever, and the hostages were released. Why? Because the Iranians were told in a one-way communication the following: the President will be inaugurated around lunchtime on the 20th of January, afterward he will go to the White House and rest, and when he wakes up and the hostages are not released, he will order the bombardment of an Iranian city. There will be no negotiations, just the bombing of Iranian cities. As for the hostages, they will have died for their country. The Iranians got the message.

I remember this case when it happened. There was also a Law & Order that used this case.

I did start watching and didn't finish the first episode. Need to restart.

For those of us that were alive then and paying attention this was exactly the feel of things on Inauguration Day. Hell, the democrats kind of helped by painting Reagan as a cowboy who would blow up the world….so why wouldn't the Iranians be scared sheetless that he'd do that to them?

That dude got completely hustled by a bunch of wanna be black-ops morons. Michael Riconosciuto is completely full of ***** Maybe he knew a mob hitman or two, but otherwise he kept playing Casolaro for a fool for years. I think they offed him, when he finally realized he'd been played for years.

It's a sad tail really, but after watching it, I wish I had my 4-hours back. To me, it was pretty obvious Riconosciuto was just mind-****ing that guy. He was trying it again with the new reporters covering the so-called mystery also.

You find out at the end that the entire "Octopus" story is just a bunch of non-sense, but that the real point of the documentary is a cautionary tale about the psychological affects conspiracy theories can have on people.

I think Casolaro killed himself. He was so far consumed with the Octopus story that he mortgaged his house, put himself in debt and was completely broke at the time of his death. I think he realized that he had just given up everything he had in life for a hoax, and saw suicide as his best option.
