3 years ago Novo was $33 a share. Today it's $136 with news of it's Wegovy fatty injection soon to be available in an oral pill form.

Quote:

Shares of Danish pharma giant Novo Nordisk soared to a record high on Thursday after it reported promising data on a new weight loss pill, a sign of the company's plans to cement its prime position in the burgeoning obesity drug market in the face of stiff competition from industry titans like Eli Lilly and an array of smaller biotech startups.

Quote:

Analysts believe the anti-obesity market is shaping up to be one of the most lucrative opportunities in the history of the pharmaceutical sector, potentially worth as much as $100 billion by the end of the decade and possibly much more. Novo, along with another diabetes leader, Eli Lilly, enjoy a virtual duopoly on the sector and both are working hard to fend off upstart competitors like Viking Therapeutics and cement their leading positions with a pipeline of new drugs and new formulations like pills, as well as bolstering their supply chains to address ongoing shortages.

So, when should we short it when they inevitably get successful ly sued for a massive amount over some side effect or other after tens of millions of fatties jump at a short cut to self control?

yep. Nothing like *&%ing with hormones to cause a fake-out in the body.

and then this kicker from the company:

  • You'll get the most from Wegovy if it's combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise. And because of how Wegovy works, it's possible to keep the weight off long term but usually only as long as you're taking the medication.

So;.... PERMANTLY create fake hormones, that have impacts on digestive system AND brain, require LIFETIME usage for "best results", when a LIFETIME of testing has yet to occur.

What possibly can go wrong.

(see synthetic androgenic steroids).

Where is the FDA?

This trend is just so bad. I honestly think it is immoral.

Obesity is the greatest epidemic in this country and now we're going to treat it with a pill? This is not a cure. It will be a habit forming, if not addictive, therapy for swimsuit season. I am already aware of suburban moms blowing the household budget on this, basically to one up the next suburban mom over.

Lifestyle change is the only answer.

The saying that the best way to lose weight is to "put the fork down" is all anyone needs to do. Yes, it's hard at first, but like anything, after a while it gets easier to do.

The problem is too many just want a quick fix without having to do any of the hard work (self control). And Big Pharma couldn't be more thrilled because of it.

Yup. And most of it has to do with carbs, including refined white flour and sugar. For decades our government has advocated eating grains more than anything, the same stuff we give to cattle to fatten them up.
Trump will fix it.

I love all the people that will get on here and talk tons of **** about fat people and then when the medication is created to assist them to lose weight, you make fun of them for that.

I would be willing to bet that most of the people talking **** about the fatties are really only thin by American standards and are probably fatties themselves.

Whatever the medication potentially does, it is probably significantly better than what diabetes and heart disease will do to them.

Most people are having to pay this out-of-pocket, so not really sure what the complaint is. If women want to use it to drop a few pounds and look better I'm not complaining.

Have you seen women lately?

Yep, portion control is a part of it. People don't realize how elasctic your stomach is and that it has the ability to shrink back down when you're not constantly filling it to the brim.

If you can adopt a diet largely consisting of red meat and chicken (and eggs), fruits and veggies, and nuts...you are on the right track...I don't care what an doctor says.

Maybe...but I would also bet that there are plenty of people who devoted years/decades of their lives to eating right and putting in the time working out and have become a bit biased...and maybe don't look highly on those cutting cornsers. Which I think is pretty silly.

I do think people, to the extent possible, should use these drugs to get to a place where they are able to have a more active and healthy lifestyle. But ultimately, all I care about is me, my fam, and those close to me.

Technology is rapidly moving us in the direction where there are no consequences for behavior.

The drug purportedly slows digestion and makes one feel more full, correct?

People are still going to stuff too many cookies in their face, regardless of how full they feel.

The drug will justify the behavior.

Not abused, they could help kickstart some people back into a healthier lifestyle by giving them hope and that initial success. But without a program built around changing habits long term and weaning off the drug, they will be stuck on it.

I hope it works, I really do. I get tired of seeing land manatees and dudes wearing T-shirts better classified as moo moos. And I'm tired of subsidizing countless billions of dollars in so many obesity related health problems that need not exist.

Doing this on Wegovy or Ozempic makes people basically vomit immediately. It's basically impossible to force yourself to over eat on these drugs

Im not overweight. But I dont think there is anything wrong with someone who is overweight, being critical of the expensive and potentially harmful shortcut people are using to lose weight. They are taking issue with the method, not the person.

What's worse?...being a little overweight, or experiencing harmful side effects? Is it better to keep your money, or throw it all towards something that's often temporary?

Many people start taking these meds lose weight, but cant afford to keep paying the costs. But the weight comes back on when they stop taking it. So they end up broke, and back to the weight they started. Wouldn't it have been better to eat a healthier diet, do a little exercise? In other words, diet and exercise is free, and sustainable. It's just not as fast/easy.

And you can lose weight by eating less, but unless you change your habits, you're likely still going to have a very unhealthy diet. So all the health issues haven't gone away.
You just look better, while you have a heart attack.

I agree with you in principal, that people should just worry about themselves. Unfortunately, these actions dont happen in a vacuum. We're increasingly paying more and more for other people's healthcare. That healthcare cost continues to rise, as we continue to get less and less active/healthy as a nation. And I've recently seen where some people are getting this paid for as part of their govt/state plan. It affects us all.

Point still remains. Especially considering all the weight comes back if you're off and still experiencing the side effects.

To me, they're both unhealthy options. One just looks better. The best option is a change in habits.

Agreed. My only issue is this...according to my pharmacist BIL...who works in a pretty affluent community...there are a lot of people coming in who are not obese, and who could probably just make a few lifestyle changes and get in great shape over the course of a few months, who are getting on it (and spending absurd $$$).

Not that I personally care about these people or what decisions they make, but I lose a little respect for this type of person tbh. And I honestly wouldn't risk the stomach paralysis or intestinal bowel problems if in their shoes. If I was morbidly obese...that would be another thing. But I could never see myself getting fat, much less morbidly obese. And I was pretty fat 20 years ago when I graduated college.

I agree with that its no substitute for willpower/discipline. But what exactly is immoral about it? I think its bad trend and like the Phenfen we won't know for a while.

But if someone is grossly overweight and this pill could add a few years to their life....Its a free country. Let them roll the dice and make the decision for themselves.

The other latest research shows that diet drinks may be the cause of a-fib in people who drink more than one or two diet drinks a day. My mother told me since the 80s that the chemicals in those drinks will cause all kinds of problems. And guess what.....now I have a-fib (with a couple other likely genetic heart stuff) and my weight and bloodwork are great.

Regarding the side effects, we already know what they are. This isn't a new drug. I think it's been used for about 8 years now.
