Seriously I wonder if the did a radiation check. If this thing was another 30,000+ feet up that might be how you deploy an initial EMP weapon. Would be pretty sneaky.

I don't see ADS-B on weather balloons, but I've seen it squawking on other high-altitude balloons
If it isn't maneuverable and is flying that low with a tiny payload then it isn't a foreign spy attempt. or if it is, it is a very bad one.

My research center here in Corpus assisted a research project from the University of Kentucky during the eclipse because they were launching balloons with payloads to measure something. I know for a fact that our Airspace Manager notified the appropriate authorities that balloons were going to be flying up to 100K feet.
I doubt that ADS-B is on many or any balloons. I know the FAA doesn't want "clutter" from non-manned ADS-B signals. We had looked at putting some ADS-B transponders on some of our UAS and the FAA told us in no uncertain terms NO!CanyonAg77 said:

Now, we have a few that we've been allowed to put them on recently, but that's because we're operating out of Class C airspace and to get our waiver it was actually a requirement.
I sometimes get on ADS- B Exchange to watch STARFlight below. The only smart thing Travis County /COA have done that is smart in the last 40 years !! In terms of balloons, I have seen one or two before they are a super red dots basically, they really stands out on the map. I didn't see any in the whole 4 state area tonight.

Correct, there are no transponders on weather balloons just the radiosonde to relay the readings back to the ground station.
