I had my fairly simple return accepted over 2 weeks ago but they're holding on to my money like it was theirs. Lazy? Incompetent? Trying to massage treasury financials by delaying paying returns this year?

Yes, I overpay a bit every year as getting caught short once due to real estate transactions was an experience I don't want to repeat.

It's not uncommon for a refund to take a month to get deposited in your bank. It's also not uncommon for it to take even longer.

The IRS has never been a speedy agency. Can't think of any speedy government agency really.

CPA checked the wrong box on our 2022 return and the IRS caught it. We submitted an amended return which the IRS acknowledges receipt of on July 27, 2023.

Was supposed to take 16 weeks for processing. Still haven't received it to this day.

Wife called mid-December for a status update. The man she spoke with of course couldn't believe this happened and had never seen anything like this is his 14 years working there. He said it could take 60 days to resolve.

I called back last week and was told that I couldn't even get a status update until the 60 days has elapsed.

The IRS should be abolished!

This is weird to me. Maybe I've been lucky but in the last 10 years or so, this is the longest it has ever taken. Last year I had my refund back in less than 10 days, and I always have filed by the end of January. Oh well, I guess filing promptly every year doesn't get me anything.

Their busiest periods are early Feb and mid-April.

So file at a different time if you want speedier results?

I overpaid one year, by accident mind you, and it led to about three months of going back and forth to get things settled.

They were more than helpful in trying to help resolve the issue, it just took forever.

Hopefully, OP, your stuff gets resolved sooner.

The Passport agency is actually impressive. They have super late hours and will actively reach you with any issues. I was amazed by their efficiency considering they are a govt agency.

That's the only one. Or if they are trying to fook you over you'll know how quick any of them really can be

Wife spent over 4 hours and they could not figure out how she all the sudden owes $6k or how to delete it. She spoke with 12 people in different departments and they all said it makes zero sense but no one could help. Had to make an appointment at the local office, first appointment is over a month away.

Government efficiency at its finest

Ah, it did not occur to me that there would be a wave of early filers like me that get it done as soon as the documentation is available. That could explain it.

We've received a refund in under a month exactly one time in the last 20 years. Usually takes two.

To what end? There will still be a federal tax code that's extremely complicated and it will have to be enforced by someone. Anger at the IRS is misplaced. This is the world we let them create. Be mad at Congress. And us. We were founded as a nation where citizens had no direct relationship with the federal government and now the federal government is involved in every aspect of our lives and much of that stems from the tax code.

We should be pushing for a repeal of the 16th Amendment, unfortunately nobody suggests that even tongue in cheek.
The federal government was never meant to be this powerful.

Imagine how bogged down they would become if they eliminated withholding and 100,000,000 taxpayers sent in a check every month. Imagine the load that would put on the USPS too.

I e-file by mid to late January every year and am usually refunded with 10-12 days by direct deposit. My returns are very simple, I do not have complex business filings or complicated investment income or deductions.

I'm just noticing they are slower than usual this year.

Filed '22 return in May '23 for FIL who died May 4th. Wife is trustee.
Accountant put bank routing and acct # as in past 3 years. Filed all the 1310 and 56 and death certificate in July.
Got letter in Nov, saying the check had been mailed, WTF and should arrive in 10 days.
Went to IRS office who said it was flagged by the Bureau of Fiscal Services for possible offset (owing money to state or fed). He was 90. BFS said there was no offset.
Accountant had been calling often since Dec.
Get letter yesterday that said the check had been mailed Nov 15th, and we can start a trace form 3911.

Never received child tax credits in 2020 or 2021. Assumed I made too much money. Didn't really think twice about it until tax season when it shows I did receive them. Found out they went to an account that was not associated with me whatsoever and spent 60 hours on hold to be auto hung up on once finally transferred to the right department bc "they were too busy to take calls at the time. Try again later."

I just gave up and didn't claim it on my taxes. They penalized me for it the next year. **** the IRS.

Overpaid last year because of the purchasing of a new home. I had to pay the IRS off before I was able to close on my home even when I had scheduled a payment for later in the Spring. So, I ended making two payments to them.

Took them about six months to reimburse me my $5k.

DFAS is extremely fast when they over pay you...now when they under pay you is a different story.
