This is a good question and I'm not sure how it fits with Occam's razor.

Trump certainly is his own worst enemy and has signifcant character and impulsive flaws.

However, the government beaurocracy is corrupt from top to bottom and has lost the trust of sane Americans.

I'm sure Trump's hiring practices are sub-par, but I'd also venture to say that the people that seek high level government employment whom Trump is left to choose from are just a choice of which type of corruption are you ok with at the time.

Because he was not good at his job the first time around. Made a lot of bad hires. In this situation he had Rand in his ear for years urging him not to do it and he did it anyway. Because Bolton told him what he wanted to hear in order to be hired.

The hiring of John Bolton might be the most pivotal thing that will keep me from ever voting for Trump again. Exposes so many flaws about him.
