Actually it was Nixon who signed the emergency declaration, passed by Democratically controlled House and Senate on January2, 1974. Remember it well as it "theoretically" added 30 minutes in travel time between home and A&M.

As I recall, it had bipartisan support and opposition. The opposition was the Midwest and some western states that had big wide open spaces and a number of Dems at that time and the strongest support was in the Northeast which had a number of Republican senators and house members.

Driving in the 80's sucked. Making the trek from Houston to Dallas was miserably long.

Remember besides the 55-speed limit, Carter Administration pushed setting your thermostat at a lower temperature during cold month and higher during warm months to help save energy. I remember Jimmy and Rosalyn wearing sweaters and standing Infront of the thermostat pushing this nonsense.
Yes - Carter was so wrong on so many things... but I always felt he loved his country.

Unlike the Biden administration who isn't doing dumb things - it's their policy and apart of their plan to dismantle the foundations of this country and sell it over-seas.
Carter family is thrilled that Obama and Biden came along, he is no longer considered the worst president any longer.

I gave a half-hearted try to find actual vote in House and Senate but was unsuccessful. But your take is what I vaguely remember.

"The 55 mph (90 km/h) National Maximum Speed Limit was made permanent when Congress enacted and President Gerald Ford signed into law the Federal-Aid Highway Amendments of 1974 on January 4, 1975."

Here they are. A lot of present/absent votes from both sides most likely to avoid an uncomfortable vote.

That 55 mph speed limit was probably completely devised by a bunch of politicians that lived up in the Northeast US who had ZERO clue what driving any kind of distance was like. Plus, with all their traffic, 55 probably didn't affect them much.

Should have taken all of those *******s out on a drive from Orange to El Paso on I-10 doing 55 and let them know how bad their law sucked.

The rest were raised in LA where you never can go above 30 mph due to traffic jams.
Bro, it's a free speed zone after about 10 pm

In regards to California, I used to say the only reason I would ever return back to that state is if I was being money whipped to do so.

Now, there aint enough money to get me to ever return.

/Ok maybe there is but y'all get the point

and that sucks because CA is the most prime piece of real estate on the globe.

I remember up through the early 90s California was the golden frontier where everything seemed to be great with limitless growth and prosperity. Then the cumulative weight of leftist policies ended the party. Coming out of Camp Pendleton in 87 I didn't want to leave the state, but now I wouldn't seriously consider living there again.

I haven't seen anything to confirm this but a life long California told me it took a big change after Harvey Milk was killed. People moved left to relieve guilt.

55: "It's a law we can live with"

Luckily for most of you, you didn't have to experience this.

My favorite PSA was "laid back Willie (Nelson) drives 55 to saves lives".
Shortly after the ad campaign started p, Willie's limo gets pulled over doing 80 mph.
Such is the life of out-of-touch celebrities being used to push someone else's agenda.

We took our niece from DFW to Tuscon to visit her first grandchild. On the way back, she offered to relieve me driving for a while. We hit that stretch east of El Paso while she was driving. I tried to nap a little and once rolled over to glance at the speedometer. She was doing 100 mph! I said "Kim, why are you driving so fast"? She replied, "I am just trying to keep up with all those Californians that keep passing me".

I drove the rest of the way!

Stuff like this is why Libertarians need to campaign on real issues and quit worrying about legalizing weed.

I definitely remember it because I had to make 2 coast to coast drives while this was the law when I was in the Navy.... SUCKED for about 80+ hours. (and the rest of the time driving anywhere too). There is a reason Jimmy Carter was the worst president in history until BHO, and 55 MPH speed limit was it.

The law was enacted in early '74, three years before Carter was inaugurated. There was a permanent provision that Ford signed in early '75.

And Obama was the worst, beating Carter out, so I agree with your sentiment. But let's keep the facts straight.
I've always wondered what if felt like to be wrong about something, and now that I've gone and done it, it doesn't feel that bad.
