Natalie Kastner, a 39-year-old disabled veteran from Texas, took a knife to her own testicles because the VA wasn't paying for a procedure

Yeah, I'm calling BS on that 163,000 number. If they want to mutilate themselves, fine, but don't make me pay for it. They'll win the lawsuit because it's in DC.
Our enemies are licking their chops and our allies are laughing at what we've become. It's pathetic.

A group of transgender veterans has sued the Department of Veteran Affairs to make them provide and pay for sex-change surgeries on the taxpayer's dime.
The Transgender American Veterans Association (TAVA) wants VA Secretary Denis McDonough to come good on pledges to offer sex-reassignment procedures to former service members.
The campaigners say they are 'essential and lifesaving medical care' for a suicide-prone group that suffers from high rates of depression and psychological distress.
TAVA counts some 163,000 trans veterans. The suit could open the door to tens of thousands of claims for taxpayer-funded ops that cost more than $100,000 for head-to-toe gender reversals.

'Transgender veterans have waited far too long for the VA to provide the gender-affirming surgery so many of us need to survive, said TAVA president Rebekka Eshler.
'We hope that this lawsuit will force Secretary McDonough to follow through on what he has been promising us since 2021. We're tired of empty promises. We need care.'
Campaigners said they filed their case on Thursday at the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington.

It has held hearings and tried to calculate how much the surgeries would end up costing, but has dragged its feet on covering surgeries, the group added.
The cost of sex change procedures vary enormously.
Breast removal operations can cost around $8,000, but 'bottom surgery' to remove or reshape genitals is more complicated, often costing in excess of $25,000.
Joshua Safer, a trans specialist at Mount Sinai said a complete sex change involving multiple procedures can 'add up to more than $100,000.'
Eshler said some trans veterans were desperate for operations they could not afford on their own.

Among them is Natalie Kastner, a 39-year-old disabled veteran from Texas who went to the VA in 2022 seeking surgery, she told AP.
When doctors there denied her request, she said she took a knife and attempted self castration.
She hit an artery and almost died, but doctors were able to save her life.
'I did not go into that bathroom looking to kill myself,' she said.
'I went into that bathroom looking to fix myself. I can only imagine how many others have done the same and have not been so lucky and have simply been listed as a suicide.'
