Sick at home & watching BBC News. This story makes one think:

British government convicted 700 postmasters of theft from 1999 to 2015.
Many were sent to prison, all were required to pay it back. 4 postmasters committed suicide.

They were all innocent.
It was a software glitch in the Fujitsu accounting software.

Government was slow to admit it and originally were encouraging finding as many as possible to prosecute.

Govt was dragging their feet , only 93 of the 700 have been exonerated. Although hyper focus from a TV show on the topic should speed things up.

Somehow ( under runs?) the extra funds increased executive bonuses.

Fujitsu CEO agreed yesterday to compensation for victims.

You telling us that government paid tech companies that have sold machines built to scan, count, and manage materials sent through them can be buggy and produce results that the government will then work to cover up and scape goat others to the extent of ruining entire lives and reputations?!

That's just the UK. Thankfully that would never happen in the U.S. We fought a war to free ourselves of unjust government overlords and all.

One thing that will really blow your mind about this is that most of the prosecutions were private criminal prosecutions, something you don't see in the US. There were a few brought by the government (the Crown Prosecution Service), but that vast majority were simply filed by the Post Office against the individuals. This is one aspect of the common law that the US pretty much did away with a century ago or more.

700 is a big number. Someone should've noticed a long time ago the statistics were unlikely to bear such a high percentage of criminal postmasters

That's the 700 convicted, I believe. There's 2700 seeking compensation, so probably another 2000 that had to make up nonexistent shortfalls.

Since it was done on a local scale, it might have taken longer for someone to put the pieces together.
