New benefit this year with work - this thing called One Pass that has a bunch of free health club memberships and free Walmart + with free delivery options.

So I just ordered groceries that I normally would have gone for on Sunday AM - and it added a default 10% tip which I promptly zeroed out

I don't tip the Amazon driver,so why should I tip Walmart?

Wife said this was mean of me. What say you TexAgs?

EDIT: meant this for general board. Will report there. Feel free to delete this.

I probably would have tipped a few years ago. However, with tipping as out of control as it's gotten, there needs to be pushback. To me it's the principle. You shouldn't get paid extra for simply doing the job you're already being paid to do.

"tip" and "walmart"

There's two words I never thought I would see together in the same sentence.

Based on my proximity to Walmart, I tip $1 for gas and $1 wear on vehicle, $2 total, regardless of order cost.

I'm not paying a dime for their labor.

This.

To shop at Walmart is bad enough, but to tip a Walmart employee is just wrong on so many levels.

It was very refreshing traveling to Japan this past summer. Tipping is not just not expected, it's often assumed to be a mistake in math by the customer. My wife was stressed out by it, though. She believes in tipping generously, even to the point of inconveniencing us by looking for a place to make change nearby so that we don't fail to leave a tip. On our last trip to Mexico, she wanted to make an Uber trip from our resort to a bank to get more cash to leave a bigger tip for housekeeping as we were checking out. She will definitely be OK with tipping Walmart or Amazon delivery drivers if that becomes common.

The wife and I went to Mexico a few weeks back and it was like a hour and half ride from the airport to hotel. We had a private car, but it was a 10 passenger van.

I didn't know how much to tip so I texted one of my worker and he told me like 30 pesos. 3 dollars for a 1.5 drive for 2 people in a 10 person van.

I tipped him 10 dollars.

If it's delivery, then yes, I'll tip a delivery driver.

If a delivery driver is using their own vehicle, I will tip them but if it is a company vehicle or we are picking up at the store, no way am I tipping.

Like someone else said, in 2020, I tipped a lot of people because they were willing to work and keep things running. At restaurants, I would do 30%+ even though service was not great because the servers were handling twice the tables they normally would. This isn't 2020 and things need to return to normal.

I remember when excellent service received a 10% tip. Now they want 20+% for even bad service.

I mean you're paying for it regardless. Everyone is asking for tips these days. I had a tow truck company ask for a tip on the payment app. If companies have to pay their employees more then they'll just raise prices. If they can push some of that wage expense to the customer via tips then they don't have to charge as much.

My only bee with tipping is asking before the completion of the job. Don't ask me for a tip if there's no incentive to work for said tip. Why tip the delivery person before they complete the order? What if my order sucks, how do I roll back the tip?

Interestingly, the Walmart app said I could add a tip to the order up to 24 hours after delivery.

I don't mind that. I like Uber's way of tipping. You don't feel pressured and you can leave reviews. This incentivizes quality. I hate being asked to tip at Jersey Mikes before my sandwich is even made.

I ended up tipping our private driver $20 each way. Japan has a reputation for being an expensive place to visit, but Mexico was more expensive almost entirely due to the tip (bribe?) culture.

Who's actually getting the tip? The Walmart employee who is pulling out your groceries or the third party person picking up the groceries and delivering them to you. Idk really. Or are they the same person that pulls your groceries and delivers them.

I use Walmart curbside delivery quite a bit. The employees who deliver those goods are not allowed to accept tips. Walmart seems to be a bit bipolar on tips.

That's not surprising, though, because Walmart seems to do a lot of stuff sort of half-ass. They'll copy something Amazon has done, but only do it about 80% as well. I'm disappointed in that because Amazon needs competition.

Just as an FYI, Walmart+ has some odd quirks, which can sometimes make your generosity feel pointless. I switched to Kroger delivery mainly due to the express "do not tip" policy.

I have had several deliveries where the order was split to multiple drivers - so the driver schlepping a case of water likely got significantly less than the driver who brought up a few bags of produce. No clue how their tips were paid out, but water guy likely only got a quarter - and no real way to give only him more money.

I'm tired of the expanded tipping expectations, especially when there are additional fees for the delivery as well.

Tipping culture is dumb. If you're a restaurant owner, why is it my job as a customer to pay your employees?

Wow you all are cheap.
You are tipping the delivery driver.
Do you tip the pizza delivery guy or your Uber eats driver?

That person drives to Walmart, checks in via an app, waits, has the groceries loaded and then drives to your house where they put your groceries by your front door.

I've been using this service for at least a year and typically tip $10, sometimes more if it's a large order.
$10 for the hassle of not getting into my car, driving to Walmart, waiting for my order and then driving home. Saves me at least half an hour. Simple.

Oh and I know this since I asked my delivery driver. Tip goes 100% to the driver.
Logos Stick

Lol, Walmart pays them to do that.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Walmart pays them a very small fee. But at least where I live or the service I have, the drivers are private contract workers - like Uber eats drivers.

Yes Uber pays their Uber eats drivers but it's a pittance. I'm sure Walmart pays these drivers the same and the drivers are relaying on tips.

Like I said, $10 is worth it for me to not drive to the grocery store.

But be a jerk. Don't tip. And no one will do these jobs and they'll go away.

I don't tip the Amazon driver (very rarely do I even see them, but wouldn't tip regardless). Likewise, I would not tip a WalMart driver.

I do tip the DoorDash / Uber Eats drivers, as well as good service at sit-down restaurants and the Uber drivers I recently took to and from an office Christmas party. I determine the amount that I will tip, however, and while I typically tip quite generously, I will withhold tips when the situation deserves it (bad service, etc).

A few years back they got paid about $10 to make a delivery within 3 miles of the store. I know that for a fact. It's most likely more than that now.

So let's say they can make 3 deliveries an hour. That's at least $30 per hour.

Like I said, I give gas money and some vehicle wear and tear money. I'm not paying for labor!

Btw, how's the air up there on your high horse?

It was once customary to tip the bagger that carried your groceries to the car for you. I used to average $1 per carryout back in high school in the 90s. We also got paid less than the cashiers because of it. It was extra motivation to make sure things were bagged properly and the service was good.
