Prosecutors in California charged a 39-year-old woman with murder after she tracked down a suspected package thief and fatally struck the victim with her car.

The San Pablo Police Department said Saturday in a press release the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 8. Officers responded to the 1100 block of Broadway Avenue for a crash between a vehicle and a pedestrian. They found the 60-year-old pedestrian with "major injuries." First responders transported the victim to the hospital where she was listed in critical condition and underwent surgery.

Cops "quickly learned" the driver was 39-year-old Dene Blakely who had been in an argument with the victim over theft of packages, the press release said.

"The suspect believed to recognize the victim as someone who had previously stolen a package from her residence, and confronted the victim as she walked in the 1100 block of Broadway Avenue," cops wrote.

That's when Blakely allegedly ran over the victim in "an intentional act of assault," police said. The press release did not say whether the victim actually stole any packages or if it was a case of mistaken identity. Cops arrested Blakely on scene and on Dec. 12 the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office charged her with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

The victim, who police have not publicly identified, died on Dec. 23 and prosecutors upgraded the charges to murder on Friday. A judge arraigned Blakely on the amended charges and gave her a $1 million bond, records show. Blakely remains at the Contra Costa County Jail. Her next court date is scheduled for Jan. 30.

None of the articles about the case mention what it was.

Agree, but if the perp is on video and it's clear that he did it, then hopefully this lady is acquitted.

If the thief had been younger, the driver would have scored more points.

She shouldn't go free, but she should be allowed to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter (up to eleven years, and she would be eligible for probation) instead of murder.

If they would prosecute "minor" crimes properly and keep bad guys in jail, citizens wouldn't have to take the law into their own hands.

This is the broken window philosophy. Prosecute people for the minor crimes they commit and then fewer people will commit more serious crimes. It works!!

I wouldn't have run the thief down, but I would report to the cops that I think I saw a video of him at the capitol on Jan 6. I think. That should be enough.

If I could have my way, we'd go back to more effective forms of punishment for thievery:

First offense: Lose two fingers
Second offense: Lose a hand
Third offense: Lose the other hand

Etc.

As long as it was the right person, I would find not guilty. Cali needs to start enforcing basic laws against theft. Until then, if I was a juror there. I would not hold a single victim accountable for anything they do against a perp. Don't care how disproportionate their response is

Well, don't steal and deprive hard working people of the fruits of their labor if you don't want to get killed.

Driver obviously committed a serious crime, but I don't feel bad for the thief one bit.
