Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Board of Education are following the lead of other major cities and eliminating gifted school programs in the name of achieving greater racial and social "equity." Eleven "high-achieving selective-enrollment schools" will be eliminated, according to Chicago Board of Education CEO Pedro Martinez, to reduce "stratification and inequity."

They'll just send their kids to private school. They will ensure that their kids never have to deal with the consequences of their own policies.

Goes to prove that liberals care more about dragging down successful people than building up those who aren't yet successful. Pure envy. They just can't stand the thought of someone excelling over others. Especially if they don't have the "right" DEI attributes.

Make as many of them as possible stupid, dumb, and uneducated.

That is how Democrats like their voters.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Assuming this increases private school attendance that may well be the point.

It reduces the overall number of students while not reducing tax revenue (thus saving money) and further reduces the cost of running these additional programs.

Call me cynical, but this sounds like cost cutting in the guise of "social justice".

The mayor was probably targeting this school. 41% white ; 22 % Hispanic ; 22% Asian ; 9 % black .

Nothing like striving for mediocrity

Not a new thing.

When I was a freshman in inner city Houston in 1983, I was in "major works" advanced college prep classes.

My sophomore year the major works program was eliminated because some bureaucrat figured out there was too high a percentage of white students in those classes.

So instead I was put in the classes with the guys who couldn't read.

Nothing like admitting out loud that there is a difference in learning abilities within certain groups.....so let's just dumb down everybody.. in the name of racial and social justice...........brave strategy Mayor Johnson.

Something makes me think that if the school really is this good, some benefactor or private entity will step in to try to keep it running as a private school with the existing staff and facility.

Maybe NFL/Bears, but teacher union probably wouldn't allow it.

If I were Payton's heirs, I'd ask the district to rename it to Brandon Johnson HS...

**** equity as a rationale for policy. Tired of that garbage leftist rationale to strive for mediocrity that harms everyone, and in compounding fashion over time.

Guess the goal is to have low-achieving non-selective-enrollment schools that will continue to have stratification and inequity (because life isn't fair and impartial - sorry). Some people are great at singing, others aren't. Some are great at math, others aren't. Some are great at reading, some aren't. Some are great at sports, some aren't. You can continue saying this about just about everything in the world.

Trying to 'level' the playing field will only result in punishing the high achievers and the over allocation of resources for the low achievers. That then ultimately lowers the achievement of the social collective, but I guess that is what the Left wants.

That's how you establish a dictatorship.
1. Make kids stupid
2. Put them on welfare as grown ups
3. 52% of population on welfare
4. Implement dictatorship.

Liberals think the only way to achieve equality is to eliminate differences in the educational rigor. Aren't differences by definition the basis of diversity? The way I read it is that you can have equality or diversity, but these concepts are mutually exclusive.

But yeah, you'll achieve equality. Equally uneducated and equally unprepared for adult life.

The only way to stop this equity nonsense is to apply it to all groups being represented equally based on local demographics. I would like to see an NBA team that is forced to have 2 white people, 1 asian, 1 hispanic, and 1 black person. That would make for some fun theatrics.

All of the higher education institutions and companies hanging their hat on DEI are going to enroll, drop education standards, and employ these underachievers to meet quotas.

Idiocracy is turning into a documentary.
